What will cause the error "cannot resolve backlink"? pctest (Programmer) (OP) 2 Jun 04 14:31 How can I find out what causes the error "cannot resolve backlink"?I want to know how to duplicate this error.Thank you for any help. RE: What will cause the error "cannot resolve backlink"? wgcs (Programmer) 2 Jun 04 14:46 Basically, every table (.DBF file) that is part of a DBC (database container) has the path to the .DBC file embedded in the .DBF header. When VFP reports it can't resolve this "backlink", either the table has moved, or the .DBC has moved (or been deleted).Instead of just moving dbfs around that are in a database, use the "FREE TABLE tablename" command to remove the backlink. RE: What will cause the error "cannot resolve backlink"? pctest (Programmer) (OP) 2 Jun 04 14:58 Hi wgcs,I understand that dbf contains the path to the dbc.I'm interested in how to duplicate this error.I have tried to move a dbf away from its associated dbc and use it.But this will only get the dialogue to "Would you like to try to locate the owning database or delete the link...?I have tried to delete a dbf and then validate database. This will only yield cannot find the file...Thank you for any help. RE: What will cause the error "cannot resolve backlink"? wgcs (Programmer) 2 Jun 04 15:14 Try copying a table to a temp location, drop the table from the DBC,copy the table back, then try to open the table.Without an ON ERROR routine, you get a message "Cannot link table ... with its database.... would you like to try t

to the dbc itself into the bytes following the http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Fox/microsoft.public.fox.programmer.exchange/2009-02/msg00024.html field definition array. If you subsequently copy the table http://microsoft.public.fox.vfp.dbc.narkive.com/BQT2i96x/cannot-resolve-backlink to a new location or copy the dbc files to a new location, VFP will become unable to resolve this link. The simple act of adding & removing it to a de will not accomplish this, however, cannot resolve if the dbc in question is current at the time a table is added or created, the correct information will be written into the header. Simply removing the offending table from the database and then adding it back does not always solve the problem. As it turns out, if the offending table is loaded in the data environment of a form, then you must remove the table from the form and then add it back to the form. Once you do that, the "Cannot resolve backlink" error will stop. Kevin Clark . References: Fixing "Cannot resolve backlink" From: kevclark64 Prev by Date: How to create a duplicate (not sub) class. it should be posted in here instead. What are the possible causes to get the error "Cannot resolve backlink"?My understanding is that opening a dbf which has problem in locating its dbcwill get this error. Are there any other possible causes? If opening a dbfcan locate its dbc but the dbf structure is different from the informationrecorded in the dbc, will there be an error and what is it?Thanks,Peter Dan Freeman 2005-08-04 20:27:01 UTC PermalinkRaw Message If the DBC is deleted or moved such that it can't be found, you'll get thiserror. Solution: always move DBF/DBC (and related files) as a set.If the DBF structure differs from what's in the DBC you'll get any of avariety of errors. VFP will object to the key being invalid, or tell you thedatabase needs to be validated. This is why daily FULL backups are of paramount importance.DanPost by PeterNote: I have already posted this in another discussion groupfox.vfp.setup but I repost it in here since it should be posted inhere instead. What are the possible causes to get the error "Cannot resolvebacklink"?My understanding is that opening a dbf which has problem in locatingits dbc will get this error.
