the Apache "cannot resolve host name"problem Posted on October 18, 2011October 26, 2012 by sammaye in Software When this annoying little warning occurs you can just make Apache default to localhost by: sudo vi /etc/apache2/httpd.conf Then adding this line to that file: ServerName localhost Just restart Apache and cannot resolve hostname linux bam it is no longer there. I have added all of the virtualhosts to my httpd.conf file and alos uncommented the namevirtualhost line.I also have my domain name pointing to the correct ip address. I keep getting these errors and cannot seem to figure out why. I have looked all over the place and at many tutorials but nothing seems to work apache-2.2 centos virtualhost namevirtualhost share|improve this question asked May 9 '12 at 16:38 arrowill12 16416 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted Looks like a typo. Instead of: NameVirtualHost *:80 ..you have: NameVirtualHost *:80/ Since the port section isn't pure numbers, instead of seeing * as the host part, it thinks *:80/ is a hostname (and :80 is the implied default port, for a config of *:80\:80). Fix that and you should be ok. share|improve this answer answered May 9 '12 at 20:46 Shane Madden♦ 91.3k6107181 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. And googled it, and this forum post came up. It was the second thing that came up actually, the first thing that came up didn't really have the resolution to this mostly self explanatory error. I mean you know its a dns thing because its talking about resolving a name. This page which came up first in google: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w...che_Web_Server Says something about putting localhost in the VirtualHost directive. I thought that was weird. The problem I encoutered was that someone setup ip based virtual hosts when they really wanted name based, and one of the domains wasn't in dns. Just looking at this sorted it out: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/name-based.html And I stuck the domain in /etc/hosts a line something like: ip.ad.ddr.ess example.com The actuall ip address of the server, so this way it doesn't query for the address externally. Anyhow just t
