"Certificate Error" impossible to avoid on my Prosafe FVS336G web-based interface? 06-18-2009 1:35 PM "Certificate Error" impossible to avoid on my Prosafe FVS336G web-based interface? We are using a Netopia 3347 DSL modem for our main DSL line input, which passes on to a Netgear Prosafe FVS336G. The initiail 192.168.1.1 login works fine (still shows certificate error, but the login works anyway). I make all the changes necessary, internet connectivity is successful, and then I logout. Next time I try http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_7/certificate-error-given-on-access-of-my-netgear/96a2e4b8-39c2-42fc-a880-085bc8efd5f1 to log in, I get a message telling me I'm "Blocked to login by WAN".I'm told by netgear support that I must have set it up to be restricted to login by only certain IP addresses. I asked if this was default, and he said no. I, of course, did NOT do this, but I reset it to defaults anyway, and set it up again, making sure to http://hardware.programming4.us/forums/t/57134.aspx check all restrictions so that there were none.Same problem. And the certificate error seems to be labelled as "Mismatched Address". And no amount of certificate importing seems to solve it. To top it off, I STILL think I'd receive the "Blocked to login" message, even if I solved the certificate issue. But. one step at a time, the way I see it.Anyone with similar problems or any ideas on how to handle this? I'm baffled, and tech support seems to be baffled as well. 06-18-2009 1:41 PM In reply to "Certificate Error" impossible to avoid on my Prosafe FVS336G web-based interface? The cert error is coming because the device is using a factory default self-signed cert - this is fine and normal. If you wanted, you could replace this with a commercial CA cert as outlined in chapter 7 of the user manual. If you are anticipating getting a cert from your work, you could import their root CA cert and the cert issued to you by them as well. This shouldn't affect the main functionality either way, just get rid of the error box. Please note the very first Known Issue for these devices, as listed on the firmware u
a Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS336G in December 2008. I was mostly interested in its dual-WAN and SSL VPN capabilities. In regards to the SSL VPN feature, I remain disappointed and do not recommend https://www.jasonpearce.com/2009/05/21/netgear-prosafe-vpn-not-ready-for-ssl-vpn/ purchasing a FVS336G. Dual-WAN The dual-WAN feature works okay for a small business. Basically when WAN1 fails (which requires at least two minutes of no Internet), WAN2 kicks in. Aside from suffering a two-minute http://www.ebay.com/itm/Netgear-FVS336G-ProSafe-Dual-WAN-Gigabit-SSL-VPN-Firewall-w-4-Port-Gb-Switch-/280758762330 outage, this works. SSL VPN The SSL VPN feature, however, has never worked. In six months, I've made 20 support phone calls and have waited for and installed three separate firmware updates (currently using version certificate error 3.0.5-24). Still, I'm unable to establish an SSL VPN connection that doesn't involve lowering browser security settings, accepting invalid certificates, or even rolling the date on a computer back to 2008. Netgear's biggest and most recent folly was that it failed to renew the SSL Certificate they use to sign both the Java and ActiveX clients that are temporarily installed when establishing an SSL VPN session -- shown here: Their fvs336g certificate error certificate expired on 05/08/09. Without a working certificate, browsers rightfully balk at the thought of installing software from an untrusted and unauthenticated source. I'm sure it was just an oversight, but it's another thorn in my side. I've put forth a lot of effort getting a working SSL VPN connection with this device that is easy for people to use. So far, SSL VPN remains a feature that is marketed for the product but not delivered. In short, avoid purchasing a Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS336G if you expect to use their SSL VPN features.
