Firewall (Cisco ASA 5505) issue? up vote 2 down vote favorite 1 I've got the following set up: LAN -> DHCP / DNS / VPN server (OSX 10.6) -> Cisco ASA http://serverfault.com/questions/179110/vpn-is-working-except-for-dns-lookups-firewall-cisco-asa-5505-issue 5505 -> WAN Connecting to the LAN via VPN works fine. I get all the details properly and I can ping any host on the internal network using their IP. However, I can't do any host lookups whatsoever. I've looked through the logs on and found this nugget in the firewall log: 3 Sep 08 2010 10:46:40 305006 10.0.0.197 65371 portmap translation creation failed for udp src inside:myhostname.local/53 dst inside:10.0.0.197/65371 Port 53 is DNS services, no? Because of that log entry, I'm thinking that the issue is with the firewall, not the server. Any ideas? Please keep in mind that I have very little knowledge and experience with this kind of firewall and the little experience I do have is with the ASDM GUI console, not the CLI console. domain-name-system vpn firewall mac-osx-server cisco-asa share|improve this question edited Oct 14 '15 at 9:54 Oxwivi 15410 asked Sep 8 '10 at 10:11 macke 1342416 As a first step, verify that the VPN client is set to use your internal DNS servers for name resolution. your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now Hi All, I have a user who works from home a few days a week, and connects to our network via a L2TP VPN connection. A problem has recently occurred https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/315301-force-laptop-to-use-company-dns-through-vpn-bypass-isp-s-dns where the laptop is no longer using our DNS servers, when connected to us via the VPN, therefore network drives/file shares are not working correctly. It seems to be using his ISP's DNS servers instead of our DNS Servers. The http://hydrous.net/weblog/2009/10/28/force-windows-to-use-a-vpns-dns-server VPN client seems to be fine, as I can ping and access our servers using their IP addresses, but not their host names. We also have many remote workers that use the same VPN client without any problems cisco vpn at all. So I think it must be a config change that his ISP has made, maybe?!? I have a feeling this is something to do with binding priorities, but unsure where or how to force the connection to use our DNS, and not the ISP's. Has anyone experienced this before? Or has any suggestions on how to diagnose further, or resolve? ***Edit*** Laptop is running Windows XP Pro SP3 Thanks. If so, it may be how he has his home netowork set up. There may not be anything you can do on that side, but you may be able to do something on the corp side. Change his DNS settings on the laptop to static. Set the domain DNS server as the first one, then his ISP as the second. When he's at work it'll use yours, and when he's connected on the VPN, but it won't find anything when not connected and flip over to the ISP DNS. You can make this static change without changing his IP address to static, so you won't muck anything up with addresses. It's worht a shot, and it'll take only about 5 minutes to do and easily reversible. 1 Chipotle OP Svarog Mar 20, 2013 at 12:56 UTC Could you post results of IPCONFIG /ALL from the side of your user when he's connected to VPN? Also, which VPN client and what type of VPN router/firewall do you use? Thanks. Alex. 0 Habanero OP TanK203 Mar 20, 2013 at 1:01 UTC Young Com
encrypt my traffic as well as access my computers at home. Unfortunately, even though I had set up the VPN as the default route ("Use default gateway on remote network"), which encrypted most traffic, I noticed that my DNS queries were still being passed to the local (untrusted) DNS server rather than the one at home. Not only is this insecure, it also makes it difficult to use the hostnames of my home network devices. Fortunately, the fix is pretty easy once you know it. Based on Microsoft KB311218, I discovered that the problem is a faulty binding order, which causes the dialup/VPN network adapter to be secondary to the local network adapter(s) with respect to DNS priority. These steps fixed my problem: Open Regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Linkage In the right pane, double-click Bind In the value text box, select the "\Device\NdisWanIp" item, press CTRL+X, click the top of the list of devices, and then press CTRL+V. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor. Restart your VPN connection. The article only mentions 2000 and XP. According to the comments below, Windows 7 has similar issues. 23 Comments | Leave a Comment | Permalink Comments John April 3, 2010 2:13 pm Your procedure, slightly adapted, worked beautifully on my Windows 7 laptop running the Cisco VPN client. Instead of performing step 4 as you've listed,(because my Bind pop-up window provided me with non-human readable strings) I simply cut the string at the bottom of the Bind list and pasted it at the top so that it was the first entry. I closed the Registry Editor and restarted the VPN client. It now works like a charm.!!! After looking at over 100 web forums for help, this was the one that made the critical difference. thanks!!! John Bill May 29, 2010 4:41 pm Great post. Also helped me as well with Win7 and a Fortigate SSL VPN dns issue. Carlos June 29, 2011 7:43 am Thanks a lot that helped me too with WIndows 7 and Cisco VPN client. I also had only GUIDs in this registry key and no clue which of
