With Lion, Error 51 is being returned stating it is unable to communication with the subsystem. Is there a known workaround for this?Thank you! Conencting to a VPN 3k concentrator can have mixed results, because they haven't updated those things in a while, and they will be end of support from Cisco next year. The OS VPN can be configured in your network properties, and you get to stay in 64 bit mode. Someone suggested I hold down the 2 and 3 keys when I restart so that the system will revert back to 32 bit (whatever that means). It worked after I did that. I just need to remember to hold it down whenever I turn the computer on. Or else, I'll have to restart to access the VPN.I'm not sure what gets affected when you do this though. But, I seem to be able to carry on very well. A fix for 'Error 51' with the Cisco VPN Client Sep 02, '08 07:30:03AM • Contributed by: robg To connect to Macworld's servers, I use the Cisco VPN Client (version 4.9.01). While this works well most of the time, I occasionally receive this error message when I launch the http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080902050428729 app: Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem. Please make sure that you have at least one network interface that is currently active and has an IP address and start this application again. When this occurs, I definitely have an http://serverfault.com/questions/424918/cisco-error-51-on-osx-10-7-4 active network interface that has an IP address, so it's quite clearly not an issue with my machine's settings. The problem seems to be related to sleeping the Mac after using the Cisco VPN Client; this sometimes (but not always) will lead cisco vpn to the above error message when I next try to use the VPN Client. What makes it extra frustrating is that it's not consistent -- the app will work for days at a time through sleep and wake cycles, then spontaneously decide it's time for error 51 to appear. I used to think rebooting was the only way to solve this problem -- I hadn't had much luck with the solutions posted in this older hint. A while back, after getting "51'd" again, I went cisco vpn error in search of a better solution -- and I found one. In Terminal, use this relatively simple command to stop and restart the kernel extension that the Cisco VPN Client uses: sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart In the two or three times I've had this problem occur since finding the above solution, restarting the kernel extension has fixed the problem every time. So thanks to Anders.com for solving this frustrating issue with the Cisco VPN Client. I would hope a future Cisco VPN Client update would solve the issue entirely, but that fix has been published for two years already, so I'm not holding my breath. • Currently 3.75 / 5 You rated: 2 / 5 (8 votes cast) [62,108 views] Hint Options Printable Hint Format Subscribe to 'macosxhints.com application tips' A fix for 'Error 51' with the Cisco VPN Client | 15 comments | Create New Account Newest First Oldest First Flat Nested No Comments Threaded Click here to return to the 'A fix for 'Error 51' with the Cisco VPN Client' hint The following comments are owned by whoever posted them. I tired other clients, including the in-built client but the decrypted shared key have characters that are known to break the key ($ and &). Cisco is recommending migration to Cisco AnyConnect. That's the bad news. The good news is that you should be able to configure the VPN connection directly within OS X without installing VPN Client. The other end will have to provide you connection information and possibly a certificate file, but that should be easy enough. Detailed information can be found in Cisco's documentation. share|improve this answer edited Sep 11 '12 at 10:46 answered Sep 11 '12 at 6:41 Michael Hampton♦ 122k18206415 Thank you, the IT team of the company I need to connect to said that Cisco Anyconnect does not work
