When I click on the shortcut to intialize the program, it returns an error which reads: "Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem Please make sure that at least one network interface is active and has an IP address and start

this application again." I have unintalled the client software and then re-installed, I have installed a newer version of the client software, and then uninstalled and re-installed the original version of the Cisco client software, and nothing has corrected this issue. At one point in time, the client software ran perfectly on this laptop. Without any knowledge of any changes to the system, it just started this error message a week ago and I cannot get around it. Please advise on this - it is a critical issue dealing with a local law enforcement agency. 0 Question by:nsdhouston Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 5 Best Solution byjkittle99 More than likely - you made the right choice. Don't know if you're dealing with a "windows thing" or an environmental issue

in Mac OS X instead of the CiscoVPN software. Here's a guide that tells you how to convert from CiscoVPN to the native OS X client. http://www.anders.com/cms/192/CiscoVPN/Error.51:.Unable.to.communicate.with If you are running Cisco's VPNClient on Mac OSX, you might be familiar with (or tormented by) "Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem". The simple fix is to quit VPNClient, open a Terminal window, (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and type one of the following: (for older versions) sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart (for newer versions) sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext and give your cisco vpn password when it asks. This will stop and start the "VPN Subsystem", or in other words restart the CiscoVPN.kext extension. Cisco seems to have problems when network adapters disappear and reappear, something that happens commonly in Wireless or Dial-up scenerios. Sometimes putting a system to sleep, disconnecting an Ethernet cable or simply reconnecting your wireless will cause CiscoVPN to loose track of the network cisco vpn client adapters on the system. Considering that CiscoVPN is typically used by telecommuters, this is an astonishing oversight on Cisco's part. The above hack should side-step all of these issues by causing the CiscoVPN to re-initialize. It makes one ask, why couldn't Cisco have just put the restart into their client? Or a better idea would be to not reinvent the wheel and use the existing IPSec VPN support in OSX! Am I missing something? EDIT: The MacWorld guys came up with a simpler way to do the same thing: sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN Posted by Anders Brownworth Monday, November 13, 2006 7:25 PM Tweet Comments (269) Jeff from Chicago #1 | Friday, March 23, 2007 6:53 AM Thanks for the tip - this worked like a charm. todd from boston #2 | Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:29 AM you the man - thanks!
