The computer will still not boot from the hard drive. 6-hours later, and many attempts at troubleshooting, the system still will not boot from the hard drive. Once I boot the system from the floppy, all is well. All systems and functions normal. Go download/find the manual for your motherboard and you are looking for something called CMOS reset. It usually involves moving a jumper on the motherboard. –Scott Chamberlain Oct 15 '12 at 7:49 Little bit confused before updating the BIOS. to have a little play to see if things are fixable some other way .....so I removed the cmos battery and replaced it with a known good one..... Rebooted and now all I get is the puta detecting the HD and CD drive (yes CD not dvd ) and giveing me the message CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded And then it stalls.... Have left it for a couple of hours to see if it can "think" it's way through it and have tried other batteries. Have left battery out for over an hour and have moved what I guess are the jumper short out thingies (yes have moved multiple, cos have no idea as to what one it may be ) Can't find a schematic to tell me the right ones to short,\Mobo is Albatron KX600 pro. So folks how do I get through this cheksum error and get back to my insert disk error !!!! I have a feeling that my initial problem is hardware rather than software .... but I had done everything I could to try and track that down before changeing the battery.... All thoughts appreciated. geek_smyrnia, Jun 30, 3:51 pm Is this your motherboard ? http://www.albatron.com.tw/English/product/mb/pro_detail.asp?rlink=Specification&no=65 geek_blenheim-trader, Jun 30, 4:08 pm blenheim-trader thanks for that url....got the manual from it:) Not sure why I didn't find it on my walk around there... The pins I shorted were the right ones... and after a few more boots and waits have got back to the insert disk stage....... But it wont even boot from a Puppy live disk so have to assume the cd drive is naffed.... Guess next step is to transplant my known good dvd drive into the system.... But this is one case that I am suspicious that a repair install is not the solution. The OS is XP by the way. Again all thoughts are welcomed..... Thanks geek_smyrnia, Jun 30, 4:40 pm Normally the CMOS checksum error message is accompanied with a "Press F1 to continue" Have you checked the boot order in the BIOS? also, older boards have "boot from other device" enable/disable, make sure it is enabled (this allows the board to boot from another device if the first one in the list doesn't work). geek_damon3, Jun 30, 4:43 pm I'll throw one in for ya, double check that the hdd is firing up - I have a tb drive in this machine that often used to throw a hissy and won't spinup, a quick
