If Google detects any appreciable number of site errors, we'll try to notify you in the form of a message, regardless of the size of your site. Google has unleashed significantly more data that promises to be extremely useful for SEOs. Since we’ve long since lost sufficient keyword data in Google Analytics, we’ve come to rely on Search Console more than ever. The “Search Analytics” and “Links to Your Site” sections are two of the top features that did not exist in the old Webmaster Tools. While we may never be completely satisfied with Google’s tools and may occasionally call their bluffs, they do release some helpful information (from time to time). To their credit, Google has developed more help docs and support resources to aid Search Console users in locating and fixing errors. Despite the fact that some of this isn’t as fun as creating 10x content or watching which of your keywords have jumped in the rankings, this category of SEO is still extremely important. Looking at it through Portent’s epic visualization of how Internet marketing pieces fit together, fixing crawl errors in Search Console fits squarely into the "infrastructure" piece: If you can develop good habits and practice preventative maintenance, weekly spot checks on crawl errors will be perfectly adequate to keep them under control.

404 Page Not Found Crawl Errors Using Google Webmaster Tools There's many reasons you may suffer from 404 page not found crawl errors however the most important thing is you fix them. There are many ways to check for broken links, some of which i have written about previously. You'll need to have created an account with Google Webmaster Tools before we can proceed. Login to your Webmaster Tools account and navigate to crawl errors Crawl Errors Click the errors you want to fix for example: Not Found You'll now arrive at a page listing all your 404 Page Not Found URL's of which only some are real so don't worry. On the left you'll find a list of the URL's which are producing crawl errors. On the right you'll see which pages have Linked From the error page. Click the number underneath the Linked From Column which google crawl errors will produce a list of page URL's linking to the error page. On the next page displaying the Linked From URL's, you can click on the URL's, locate the link to the error page and either delete it or change it to the correct URL. You'll find some pages which produce 404 errors will drop off the reports after a while as the data is historic and all the links may have already been removed. In this example, we'll look at the 3rd URL from the screenshot above and find out why its returning a not found error. Here's the URL we'll check: wpsites.net/uncategorized/hello-world/ This is an old URL which comes with a new installation of WordPress which i deleted after i installed this WordPress site. That's the reason its producing a 404 page not found error. Its linked from 2 pages so i'll click on the 2 pages link and see which pages need to be looked at. The 2 pages that are linking to the 404 error page are also not found so the URL's producing the errors will eventually drop off the report once the data in Webmaster Tools is updated. No need for any action. You'll find this is the case with some of your Not Found errors in Webmaster Tools.

SUBSCRIBE Google Webmaster Tools Crawl Errors Reports Now Showing Errors On Final Redirect URL Barry Schwartz on January 22, 2014 at 9:03 am More Google's John Mueller announced on the Google Webmaster blog this morning that the Google Webmaster Tools team has updated the crawl errors report to show errors on the final URL of the redirect, as opposed to the origin URL of the redirect. What this means is that Google is now showing the errors on the final destination URL instead of the redirecting URL. This should make it easier for webmasters to diagnose issues in their crawl error report, because it makes it easier for the webmaster to locate the page with the error. In the past, Google would have reported the error observed at the end under URL A. Now, Google is reporting the error on URL B, as illustrated in the redirect graphic above. The errors will also be visible in the total error counts for some websites.
