and whether or not to use interleaving I'm trying to find a good balance. However I want to see if there's some general rule of thumb which can be applied to percentage of CRC errors. Is there some particular point where the additional errors mean you're losing more from the additional errors than you gain from the better latency? Dropping packets will kill throughput a lot faster than any potential increase in link speed. That being said, though, the impact of dropped packets varies depending on the type of traffic you're pumping through. Certain kinds of traffic (gaming, voice, real time video, etc.) are a lot less forgiving of packet drops than normal web browsing, for example. Interleaving is best for pure throughput. However, the SNRM is also important. If the client syncs slower and so leaves a greater SNRM, the fastpath mode can be used to lower latency at the expense of throughput. A good threshold for using fastpath is 9dB at night. At night? Your line is more noisy at night due to atmospherics, a high SNRM during the day may be not so high at night. My own line (which can do 5Mbps sync at 3dB SNRM in the day) has a 3dB differential between night and day. An application like RouterStats will allow you to graph your router. After many tests http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?t=87084 I am getting 1/5th or less the bandwidth that I should and I started looking into it. It seems I have high packet loss and it seems to be between my modem and the ISP. (As far as I can tell anyways) What can I do to decrease packet loss and improve speed? Update After moving the modem to a different wall jack, the attenuation has improved and I haven't seen any crc errors. (Yet) My speed has improved about double, however I am still not getting the http://superuser.com/questions/863298/what-can-i-do-to-improve-dsl-connection-stability 45mbps that I should be getting (only getting 8). networking router packet-loss share|improve this question edited Jan 15 '15 at 22:07 asked Jan 11 '15 at 6:57 Tyler Scott 13311 1 You contact your ISP this sort of behavior cannot be solved by you. –Ramhound Jan 11 '15 at 8:54 I am going to contact my ISP to see what they think and see if they can fix the issue. –Tyler Scott Jan 12 '15 at 19:46 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote CRC errors are bad, and the fact that those are near end means they are errors the modem picks up on the incoming signal - meaning that the frames coming into the modem are damaged in some way and the modem must request they be resent, which slows down your connection. Upstream margins are also getting a bit high which can lead to instability. You didn't show the rate at which the modem is synced - that can help with diagnosis. Mostly what this looks like is line trouble. The first thing you want to test is a connection directly to your NID. Find the box where it comes into the house of the street - there will be a test jack on the circuit that your DSL is on. You might need to run an extension cord to get power out there - so plan how to do that before you start moving things around (makes your life easier). Plug the modem in to
