document can help you to determine the reasons behind cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors on your ATM interface. Before You Begin Conventions For more information on document conventions, see the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions. Prerequisites There are no specific prerequisites for this document. Components Used This document is not restricted to specific software and hardware versions. ATM Communication atm network Flash Animation: ATM Communication Click on ATM communication to see a Flash animation on how IP packets segment into ATM cells, how interfaces interpret and reassemble ATM cells into IP, and what happens when cells are lost in transit. CRC Overview The output of show interfaces commands on Cisco devices includes numerous counters. One such counter is CRC, which counts the number of times (that is, for how many packets) the checksum generated by the originating station, or far end device, does not match the checksum calculated from the data received. By doing this, CRC detects changes to a protocol data unit (PDU) during transmission. It is important that we retain the true value of this PDU because we want to ensure that the destination correctly interprets the data that we're communicating. CRC errors typically indicate noise, gain hits or transmission problems on the data link, or on the interface itself. On an ethernet segment, CRC errors result from collisions or from a station transmitting bad data. On an ATM interface,

There may be bit errors at the ATM level or SAR errors at the AAL5 level. The errors may be due to bad media, interface hardware, or internal resource limitations. This section covers the meaning of different error counters from both the MIB and the CLI. Some standard errors are as follows: HEC errors: The HEC (Header Error Control) in the ATM cell header is an 8-bit CRC code. HEC errors would be similar to FCS errors in Ethernet (see the "Error/Fault Monitoring" section in Chapter 12. SAR timeouts: For the AAL5 layer—this error indicates CPCS PDUs that are discarded because they were not reassembled in the required time period. SDUs too long: Also for the AAL5 layer—this error means that CPCS PDUs were discarded becaus

After these circuits were installed, we started having ftp issues, in that the transfer either wouldn't start or would hang up.After arguing with my ISP that it wasn't my LAN equipment (already tested all out), and after they told me to dump my internet cookies, they finally agreed that there was something configured wrong on the router (they configured it for us). After they made some configuration changes, the problem was drastically improved. But there is still one thing that is bugging me.We are getting AAL5 CRC errors on our ATM0/IMA0.1 interfacee. These errors keep incrementing. Are these errors I should be concerned about? My ISP stated that while
