This will boot your root partition with the installation cd's kernel. Hail to the thief! I have replaced the hard-drive, loaded with a http://serverfault.com/questions/9136/possible-causes-of-a-crc-error-in-linux clone of the old hard-drive, but I still get the error. Could faulty memory, a problem with Linux itself, or some other factor be causing this? linux share|improve this question edited May 17 '09 at 17:21 community wiki 3 revs, 2 users 67%anon add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote Please download and run Memtest86+ to rule out memory errors. If there are any, replace your RAM. If there aren't, get a LiveCD containing smartmontools package from here, boot from it and check your disks' SMART status (as well as run self-tests to detect bad sectors). If everything passes, the issue is elsewhere - however, it's likely that one of the above tests will fail. share|improve this answer answered May 17 '09 at 17:20 community wiki ASk memtest86 is an excellent tool for this- make sure you let it run overnight to really test everything. –Tim Howland May 18 '09 at 0:37 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Similar issue discussed here, also this could be due a CRC checksum failure

"Uncompressing Linux... crc error -- System halted". I've also tried this using a Linux mint live cd, same error. Is this something related to the MB? ubuntu motherboard share|improve this question asked Apr 3 '11 at 20:30 Crackerjack 236134 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote According to this the kernel doesn't like itself. Based on what you've said, I feel like your hard drive might be to blame. Is it old? Do you have a spare to test on? share|improve this answer answered Apr 3 '11 at 20:33 n0pe 7,048145087 add a comment| Did you find this question interesting? If you can't do either of those, I'd try installing from a flash drive. I think that a flakey cd drive is more likely than the motherboard. You can also try a memory test, live cd here or some Ubuntu live cds have it on there. Motherboard problems could in theory be an issue too, but I've never seen it, so I'd try the above first. share|improve this answer answered Apr 3 '11 at 21:28 emgee 4,0291426 add a comment| You must log in to answer this question.
