CRC Recovery Tool? Discussion in 'Hardware' started by J8son, Dec 19, 2010. J8son Corporal I have three internal SATA drives made by Western Digital (2x 320gigs and a 400gig). hard disk crc error recovery In trying to backup data between drives I'm getting the dreaded "Cyclic Redundancy how to repair crc error Error" I'm sure these drives are failing and I plan to replace them with a single 1TB SATA drive. However, I repair crc error on external hard drive must do all I can to recover these files first. I've read that it's sometimes possible to work around a CRC error as it's simply a mathematical algorithm. Can someone recommend a reliable data recovery

tool? I'm willing to purchase a good pro level tool for the future. Thanks! J8son, Dec 19, 2010 #1 mcsmc MajorGeek Hi Have you tried Unstoppable Copier? It's good for damaged optical disks as well as the issue you're mentioning. You can download it here: http://www.roadkil.net/program.php?ProgramID=29 Best part? It's free. Personally, while some software is worth paying for, to a large extent I feel like I'm wasting money since data error cyclic redundancy check external hard drive fix almost every software license is worthless as soon as a new version of the paid software comes out. I try to stick to open source or freeware for most of my needs. mcsmc, Dec 19, 2010 #2 gman863 MajorGeek If your new 1TB drive is a Seagate, you might be able to disc cloning using DiscWizard, a free Seagate utility. It usually comes packaged on CD with Seagate retail boxed drives or (if you buy a bare Seagate drive) you can download it free at Seagate's website. I've used Disc Wizard many times; however not for combining three drives onto one. Prior to cloning the drives, you'll likely have format the new drive into three partitions. If interested in this option, I'd go here to download the program and read the instructions to see if DiscWizard will work for what you're doing: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD Remember: This will only work with Seagate brand drives. Hope this helps gman863, Dec 19, 2010 #3 J8son Corporal gman863 said: ↑ you'll likely have format the new drive into three partitions.Click to expand... Actualy, what I meant was that I need to do my best to recover the files and then I'll just store them and do a fresh install o

This means NTFS has a CRC for the file. I expect the offending block/sector can be known, or at least guessed. I also expect that "wrong data" can be read from the disk. If the bits of "wrong data" were inverted one by one, by brute force we could http://superuser.com/questions/399150/any-way-to-recover-a-file-with-bad-blocks-crc-error-in-windows find the correct data. A file could thus be recovered using statistics and brute-forcing bits to match the CRC. My question is, does any software do this kind of thing? Any way I could do it (I'd be happy enough to get the CRC, the drive's "wrong" data, know which is the offending block/sector there, and write a script to brute it myself, if relevant directions are given). By the way, this is a mechanical HDD. Edit: After taking a look with hex editors and such, I noticed that a bad block appears as garbage, such as filled with zeros or a copy of the last block (this seems to depend on the program), so in order to get the "real data" that is corrupted, we'd have to disable some hardware-correction that refuses to read a block which is bad. I believe this is called ECC. Also, I expect that if just a few bits are marking a block as "bad", then some 32-bit checksum from Windows could be used to brute force a match. So this question may be answered simply with guidance to do this by myself. ntfs data-recovery hard-drive-recovery bad-blocks crc share|improve this question edited Mar 11 '12 at 20:08 asked Mar 10 '12 at 13:18 Camilo Martin 1,24341737 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Unfortunately,
error, most likely encountered while copying files between hard disks. On Mac OSX, this will usually appear as some cryptic permissions message with an Error –36. To cut the geek-speak, this simply means that you hard disk may have certain files that may http://sniptools.com/windows/fix-crc-hard-disk-error-recover-data have "bad sectors", or are corrupted in other words. Fortunately, this is a common enough problem in our technically advanced world of external storage. I recommend solving this on Windows (I use both XP and OSX Leopard at the http://www.winzipcrcfix.winzipfix.com/ time of this writing). Step 1: CHKDSK Use what Windows offers you by default. The chkdsk command. Just open an MS-DOS command prompt window and go to the drive you wish to check (I'm hoping you already know crc error your way around a command prompt; if you don't please consider Step 2 below). With the command prompt showing the drive letter of the disk you wish to check, enter this command: e:> chkdsk /R Here, "e:" is my drive to be checked. The "/R" attribute asks the chkdsk command to "recover" whatever bad sectors it finds during its scan. In most cases, and if you're lucky, this ought to do it. Step 2: CDCheck (Free) Only data error cyclic if the problem you were facing still remains after you have run the chkdsk command, should you consider doing this. This is a freeware program that makes it super-easy to check/recover your disk. It can be any disk – your current hard disk, a CD or a DVD, or even an external hard disk. The interface is pretty simple as you can see in the screenshots here. Step 3: SpinRite (US$ 90) If all else has failed, just save yourself some heartburn and go straight to SpinRite. This is hands-down the best software for this purpose, as anyone in a dire need of data recovery will confirm. I would trust any piece of software from GRC. Only catch: it's not free, but when you use it you know why it's worth every last cent. It gives you a simple option to save an ISO file, which you can then easily burn on to a CD using any CD writer tool (including Windows' own right-click). Then reboot your machine so it starts from the CD. SpinRite will automatically report and recover whatever is recoverable. Next Steps Basically, a CRC error is the beginning of the end. If this is on an external hard disk, I highly recommend that you consider backing up the data immediately. hard diskOSXstorageWindows RECENTLY Have Google Chrome remember an SSL certificate on Mac OSX Fix slow ne
