With DVD Shrink 3.2 I've tried to back-up the disks of a television series-- released in 2006-- but each disk strangely gives me the exact

same result. First, the video preview shows that it completes the initial 'Analyzing' process correctly reviewing the entire contents of the disk. Then, when beginning the back-up phase, the video preview image is blank (completely black) through 4% of the deep analysis and the decryption status of the disk reads 'not encrypted'. Then, the video preview shows the title menu running through its sequence dvd43 crc error several times, by 8% the warning message comes up 'Data error: cyclic redundancy check' and DVD shrink will not continue. I noticed on several sources online people were suggesting that the disk was probably dirty or scratched. But this same scenario happens with ALL the disks of this same TV series and none of them are dirty or scratched. Still, I tried cleaning one of the disks and trying again and this time DVD shrink stopped it right away and said "DVD shrink cannot continue: copy protection error". It 'remembers' each disk I've already put in and received the 'CRC' message with and the 2nd time the disk is tried it catches the disk right away, spitting out a 'COPY PROTECTION ERROR'. I never had this situation occur before and I can shrink/back-up other disks easily. I was wondering if, because this series was released so recently, and DVD shrink probably hasn't been updated recently, if the disks just had a more sophisticated copy protection/encrytion than DVD shrink could handle. Or am i over-looking something I can do to alter the settings and bypass the problem? Any su

I have attempted to rip a copy of some DVDs I own to facilitate watching them on the netbook. I have run into some errors. First the setup: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Linux ub-desktop 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux DVD Drive - HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B I have tried multiple DVDs (Heat, Team America, The Messenger, Holy Grail). All fail in the same way. I can watch any of these DVDs from start to finish in VLC or mPlayer. No issues there. For ripping I tried AcidRip, DVD::RIP, and even fired up a virtual box of Windows to try different applications. The error log shows: Code: Oct 30 20:39:51 ub-desktop kernel: [35005.981805] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code Oct 30 20:39:51 ub-desktop kernel: [35005.981814] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE Oct 30 20:39:51 ub-desktop kernel: [35005.981822] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Medium Error [current] Oct 30 20:39:51 ub-desktop kernel: [35005.981831] sr 4:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. It failed with a CRC error at 8% into the disc (almost exactly where the movie starts). Handbrake also choked and showed encoding times that kept doubling indefinitely. The movie played from the actual disc mostly okay in VLC with a only slight crc error hiccup at that beginning of movie mark. I saw at least one other person online who had trouble ripping this particular DVD. I have heard some newer DVDs have better copy protection on them. I'm not totally sure this was the case with Hancock; maybe it was a bad disc. But in general, is there a good way to dvd crc error work around these schemes? I'm on Win XP. posted by wastelands to Computers & Internet (19 answers total) 34 users marked this as a favorite DVDfab or AnyDVD.posted by wongcorgi at 4:24 PM on December 15, 2008 wrongcorgi has it. Here's the deal though: Both are trialware, except for DVDFab's decryption and copying ONLY functions. To get where you're used to, rip with either (try DVDFab HD Decrypter first, as you might as well stick with the functions that don't expire if possible) and then point DVD Shrink (for transcoding) or DVD Decrypter (for re-mastering, selecting only certain PGCs, splitting, etc.) to the newly ripped VIDEO_TS folder and point their output to another folder.posted by Inspector.Gadget at 4:38 PM on December 15, 2008 [2 favorites] Woops, don't know where that extra letter came from. Sorry, wongcorgi.posted by Inspector.Gadget at 4:38 PM on December 15, 2008 Thanks. I've been using DVD Shrink to rip to an uncompressed .ISO file. Do those programs support that?posted by wastelands at 4:43 PM on December 15, 2008 AnyDVD is great.posted
