By Joe Burns Tweet Ah, the aggravating 404 error page. You've seen it. There you are, surfing in your custom 404 error page returns 200 status favorite search engine when you happen upon just the thing you're looking for. You click: (***Raspberry Sound Effect***) Nothing but a white page with the words "404 Error" and some other techie-sounding speak beneath. What's even more cheesy about the error code is that it really doesn't tell you what the problem is. Basically you've been informed that the server cannot find what you want. It doesn't tell you why, how to fix it, or where to go from that point. You really don't have much choice but to hit your BACK button, call the computer a dirty name, and try again. But then you see it--a server that's set up with its own special 404 error page that politely apologizes and offers you links to e-mail site administrators and maybe a site search engine. A custom 404 page is a good opportunity to keep them on your site and do more to redirect them to their destination. Setup Before going through this tutorial, you should already have created a custom 404 page and saved it into your website's directory. Implement the 404 Page To edit the 404 page, open up https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-create-a-custom-404-page-in-apache or create the site's .htaccess file. You can create it in a text editor and upload it to your site via the FTP server. Keep in mind that the name of the file has to be simply .htaccess. Add the following line to the file, replacing new404.html with the correct new error page name: ErrorDocument 404 /new404.html Save and Exit. Keep in mind that the Apache looks for the 404 page located within the site's server root. Meaning that if you place the new error page in a deeper subdirectory, you need to include that in the line, making into something like this: ErrorDocument 404 /error_pages/new404.html See the 404 Page Now visiting unavailable pages on your site should display your custom 404 page! Include some text such as Sorry, we could not find the page you were looking for... and if necessary, also any useful navigational links. For example, you may wish to add a link back to your site's home page. Create and copy a link to that new 404 Article. Create a menu item which links to the new 404 Article and 'apply' your changes. Then copy the URL information (index.php?optio...), set the menu item as 'unpublished' and close out of the menu editing page. You may want to paste the copied URL into Notepad or somewhere accessible for the time-being. Copy error.php to your Template's Directory In your Joomla! installation copy the file error.php from the templates/system directory, to your Template directory.
