Disk Defragmenter Not Working
Member Joined: May 25, 2001 Messages: 140 Likes Received: 0 BootVis requires that the Task Scheduler service is set to Automatic for it to operate properly. START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > SERVICES RH click on 'Task Scheduler' select 'properties' and change the 'Startup type' to Automatic. I'm not sure if this will fix the registry error though. Good luck. Yoshi #2 Yoshitoshi, Feb 1, 2002 Miramonti Lifer Joined: Aug 26, 2000 Messages: 28,272 Likes Received: 55 bootvis is brutal. MS doesn't have any support on it and if it doesn't work right it can be lethal. It wouldn't stop logging after I ran it and the log file got over 3gb until I could stop it. #3 Miramonti, Feb 1, 2002 (You must log in or sign up to post here.) Show Ignored Content Loading... configuration that caused this. I like to keep Windows XP Home completely seperated from Windows 98SE that I'm also using. In disk defragmenter was scheduled using another program addition to the harddisk with XP that is attached to the Primary IDE auslogics disk defrag portable connection on my Asus A7V133 motherboard there is a Promise IDE RAID controller with a two drive RAID1 array

where I start Windows 98SE from. I select which drive I like to start from in Bios SetUp and don't assign drive letters to the drives in the RAID1 array when using https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/bootvis-errors-please-help.720429/ XP. (But the Asus Promise Raid driver has been properly installed in XP and the RAID Bios will be loaded, so the array works when I assign letters.) When going to use Win98SE I switch the drive with WinXP off in Bios SetUp to avoid trouble with drive letter mixup. So I was not very surprised Bootvis didn't work in Windows XP. -- Eric http://www.verycomputer.com/416_4131c2350019f10f_1.htm P. van Westendorp Tel: +31(0252)210579 Reigerslaan 22 2215NN Voorhout Netherlands > After running bootvis trace when xp reboots, i recieve this error(attached > .jpg) > Any help appreciated > regards' > janh. Top 1. Need help with Bootvis. What are some good recommended settings for the program? Also, after the system reboots from clicking on 'optimize system', I get two error messages from Bootvis. 1. Timeout while waiting for schedule service to start 2. Failed to defrag the system, please defrag the disk manually before tracing. I tried manually defragging, then running Bootvis 'Optimize System' again. Same error messages. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! 2. Strange pixels after flattening QT-Movie 3. is useful for troubleshooting slow booting. It is also able to rearrange the loading of devices to make the bootup faster, though WinXP is already doing this optimization automatically http://smallvoid.com/article/winxp-bootvis.html every now and then. Start BootVis The left pane shows the resources which should be traced. Make sure all check-boxes are ticked In the menu select "Trace" -> "Next Boot + Drivers Trace" A window will popup allowing you to specify how many times to trace. (3 is recommended) Let Bootvis reboot your system without interfering. Start Bootvis again to analyze the results In the disk defrag menu select "Trace" -> "Optimize System" Let Bootvis do it things without interfering In the menu select "Trace" -> "Stop Tracing" If not performing this step then the Windows\System32\Logfiles\Wmi\Trace.log will keep growing for each boot and can get quite large. One can safely delete the Trace.log after this. Note it is a good idea to create a System Restore Point, before trying this tool as defrag not working there are several reports of Bootvis actually increasing the boot time (Most get an improvement). Note bootvis supports command line options to see them all execute this command: Bootvis /? Note that bootvis is dependent on the services Task Scheduler and COM+ Event System. If these services are not available this error will popup: Failed to defrag the system. Try and defrag the system manually Note if one haven't applied at least Service Pack 1 (SP1), then one should use the old version BootVis-Tool.exe (mirror) else one will get the following error with the new version (MB KB821581) (Bootvis.msi): The procedure entry point WmiOpenTraceWithCursor could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.dll More Info Fast Boot / Fast Resume Design Updated: 27 September 2007 Tags:boot-time, bootvis, logical-prefetcher Category: Windows XP / WinXP/Utilities Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
