Re: Windows Firewall not working due to Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service not working. Soon after installing the beta version of Microsoft’s AntiSpyware software, the Security Center prompted me that my Firewall was not enabled. When I click on “Recommendations� it takes met to a window that prompts me to “enable the firewall.� When I click on the “Enable� button, it indicates that “We’re sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended), and then click OK. When I go to the Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall, I am prompted with a message that indicates, “Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?� Once I click the “Yes� button it indicates that, “Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.� To try to manually start ICS, I right-clicked on “My Computer� and selected “Manage�. Then I went to “Services and Applications�, “Services�, and clicked on Start for the “Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service� The error message that I get after that is, “Could not start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. When I try to enable it error 10047 I get the following message: "windows firewall setting cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service?" when I click yes, I get this message: "windows cannot start the firewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service." when I try to start the service manually this msg appears: could not start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics) service on local computer. You are better off, installing a free program such as Sygate's Personal Firewall, Agnitum's Outpost or Zonelab's Zonealarm. Either program will do a better job than M$. I agree that this fixes only the symptom, not the problem. But XP SP2 has caused so many problems, this may well be one (more) of them. One more thing, which i am not sure if it is related, the IPSEC service can not be started as well with this error msg: "the ipsec services service terminated with the following error: the requested protocol has not been configured into the system" Oct 25, 2004 #3 RealBlackStuff TS Rookie Posts: 6,503 I don't know XP, (use Win2000 myself), but is your TCP/IP installed?
