then try to run the same app from the client computer, it gives me: Login failed for user 'LAPTOP\Guest'. After looking up the web for solution, I found that I can test the connection from theHOST computer in this way: C:\Documents and Settings\kit>sqlcmd -E -S laptop\sqlexpress1>2> The test is successful Now I run the same command on the CLIENT computer C:\Documents and Settings\Kit>sqlcmd -E -S laptop\sqlexpressMsg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server LAPTOP\SQLEXPRESS, Line 1Login failed for user 'LAPTOP\Guest'. Now I can sure that from the client computer it cannot make a connection to it, then I look at the errorLog from my host computer 2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOP\Guest'. I can't login to it until my domain account was explicitly added to SQL Server. And that's despite the fact I was member sql server error 18456 login failed for user 'nt authority system' of local Administrators group. It was very strange, so I decided microsoft sql server error 18456 login failed to investigate. To check that domain is not related to the issue I created local admin account and

logged to system from that account. But the result was the same: error 18456. Error message is intentionally uninformative to prevent disclosing of sensitive information. So I took a look https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/2733ee3e-b2a8-4397-b3e5-4f856852b450/error-18456-severity-14-state-11-valid-login-but-server-access-failure?forum=sqlsecurity at the logs where I found additional ‘state 11' piece of info. As google told me helpfully state 11 means ‘Valid login but server access failure' (you can see other states here or here). Turned out the reason was extremely simple: User Account Control. When I run SQL Server Management Studio without elevated rights UAC effectively ‘removed' Administrators membership from https://sparethought.wordpress.com/2011/06/09/troubleshooting-sql-server-error-18456-state-11/ my account and thus SQL Server couldn't grant me access, because it is only this membership was my ticket to pass in. So, the moral of this story: either always run SQL Server Management Studio with elevated rights or turn off the UAC🙂 Like this:Like Loading... I was able to connect to Analysis, Integration, and Report Services. No access to Database Engine. I googled many posts, some suggested create a SA account, some suggested run a command line script. Is there a simpler way to add Administrator auth back to my log in? Thanks Comment by Irvine -- 20/09/2011 @ 22:15 Reply BTW, I tried starting management studio using ‘run as administrator'. Comment by Irvine -- 20/09/2011 @ 22:17 Reply Run as administrator should be helpful. Did it solve your problem? If so - you can set the option to run SSMS as administrator always: go to shortcut file p

I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 and applied SP2. I opened an RDP session in console sql server error mode as myself. During installation I had the Windows AD group for the DBA's added to sysadmin role - I am a member of this group, have been for a long time. There have been no changes with my login etc. After installation I went to connect with SSMS as myself and my login was denied with the error in the error log: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11 I get this when I try to connect in RDP session on the new server, when I try to connect from my machine, and when I try to connect from yet another server in our environment. So I had another DBA try to connect - it worked for them! I did select * from dm_exec_connections and SA is of course connected with authentication scheme SQL. The other DBA is connected using NTLM, so I don't think it is kerberos. Does anyone have any insights as to what may be the problem? I have installed well over 200 SQL Server instances in my career and have never run into this before. Thanks in advance for any help. sql-server sql-server-2008-r2 authentication share|improve this question ed

The number itself deliberately doesn't tell you much, so crackers can't use it for clues on where their attempts are going wrong. –Tony Hopkinson Jan 4 '14 at 16:10 8 @David if you see a duplicate question in SO, then mark this as such.
