The XYZ group has around 10 users in there who are successfully able to access the SQL Server database. I recently added a new user to this group (at AD level), but this person is not able to access SQL Server (through Mgmt Studio) and he's error 18456 severity 14 state 6 getting the error below Login failed for user. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. I have already verified AD permissions are setup properly, user has restarted his machine, he is not part of any group that has DENY access and the SQL Server XYZ group has been removed and readded to the SQL Server instance in Mgmt Studio and server has been restarted. Any ideas on how to proceed further? Can you have the new user try from another computer and see if that's the issue? Wondering if it's an AD setup issue, since your other users are working. –Jason Whitish Mar 25 '13 at 22:23 sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/simons/archive/2011/02/01/… –Aaron Bertrand♦ Mar 25 '13 at 22:26 Has the user logged off and logged on since the group assignment? If not, the user needs to do that for the group assignment to take effect. See my answer here. –Jon Seigel Mar 26 '13 at 13:26 I had the user restart his laptop and even tried accessing from another computer but no luck..

It is very possible that you came across either one of the flavors of the two error messages http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/37564/login-failed-for-user-error-18456-severity-14-state-11 shown below: 2016-07-08 23:53:59.63 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.2016-07-08 23:53:59.63 Logon Login failed for user ‘IAAS6620137\MyInfraWindowsLogin'. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: 10.107.10.43] As you can see there are two flavors here: - The token-based message is generated for the Windows authentication logins - The login-based message is generated for the SQL authentication logins The important piece of information from that message is the part about server access validation failed. So let’s examine that carefully. During the login process, the database engine has to perform several checks regarding the login and its various attributes before letting the application connect to the SQL Server instance. Out of that big list, related to this error condition, there are two checks to find out if this login is authorized to access this server instance. There are two permissions that come into play while performing these authorization checks: - Does the login have the SERVER class permission named CONNECT SQL for this server instance? - Does the login have the ENDPOINT class permission named CONNECT for the

I keep getting the standard login failed error and in the error log I'm seeing "Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11." The login is error 18456 severity using windows authentication - here's the weird bit. I can login fine from my own machine using the same authentication, just not when I'm on the machine the database is installed on. Any ideas? When an administrator logs on, this version of Windows creates two separate access tokens for the user: a standard user access token and an administrator access token. The standard user access token contains the same user-specific information as the administrator access token, but the administrative Windows privileges and SIDs have been removed. The standard user access token is used to start applications... When you're logged in locally your administrator token is stripped. Since you granted access to your instance to BUILTIN\Administrators, you are locked out of the instance. When authenticating remotely the administrator token is preserved and you gain access. You would gain access if you'd choose to RunAs\Administrator when starting your application (SSMS?). The solution is to grant yo
