Solved IIS NT4 error 2140 Posted on 2003-10-15 Web Development 1 Verified Solution 3 Comments 1,116 Views Last Modified: 2007-12-19 My IIS server suddenly http://www.verycomputer.com/156_e577c479b73f1047_1.htm stopped starting up automatically on re-boot (NT4 server sp6a) In the services applet I noticed that the WorldWideWeb service and the ftp service did not start. Trying to start them manually resulted in "could not start the WorldWideWeb publishing service on \\server error 2140 an internal windows nt error occured. This is on an intranet. The only thing I can think of that I changed https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20767668/IIS-NT4-error-2140.html recently was that I did the windows critical updates. You could simply have a static IP address that has been assigned by your DHCP server to another computer. Then, your DHCP service might fail causing your WWWPublishing service to stop. Go to command prompt, type ipconfig /release then type ipconfig /renew Ping 127.0.0.1 and see if that goes through if it does, ping YOURPCNAME let me know what each of these does. Also, check your error logs (start >> Programs >> administrative tools >> event viewer) and see what sort of system errors you have. This should get you on your way. We were able to downloadan executable from a workstation that has Internetconnection capability and then copied it to the server'sdesktop. When trying to execute the file, it states thatthe server does not have an Internet connection and stopsthe installation process. We tried to install IE 5.5three different times error 2140 nt4 and it wasn't successful. Theinstallation seems to go well until we tried to initializeIE. We would try to use the connection wizard and itwould not find the connection. We then looked at the Service feature in the Control Paneland saw that the DHCP Manager was set to Automatic andStarted. The DHCP Client was disabled. We set it toAutomatic and tried to start service. It would go througha start process and then a popup error would show on thescreen the following:"Could not start the DHCP Client on ||Server. Error 2140an internal Windows NT error occurred."We know this system isn't the latest technology, but weare a small business that has had their share of economichard times. We appreciate any constructive input that canbe shared. We have relied in the past on outside ITservices that frankly we no longer have faith in. We hopethat we have provided enough information that someone maybe capable in pointing us in the right direction. Ifthere is any other data that is needed to make a properassessment, please forward the request.Questions:1. Can the server be a DHCP manager and a client?2. If so, what steps do we need to implement?3. Are we asking for problems having our serverconnected?4. Is the router enough of a firewall to keep theserver safe? Thanks,Bob Derek Harris
