Ended up being missing PHP modules (mysql, json, etc.) –user484474 Aug 7 '11 at 19:57 On ours, it was sending them to the access log (presumably because from Apache's point of view, it was working correctly and merely passing them along, from a deeper layer -- in our case, Passenger/Rails). Just putting this note here in case somebody is scratching their head. –Tom Hundt Jul 8 at 18:29 add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted The error log usually has the (more) specific error. often it will be permissions denied or even an interpreter that can't be found. This means the fault almost always lies with your script. e.g you uploaded a perl script but didnt give it execute permissions? or perhaps it was corrupted in a linux environment

I've setup a new Centos 6.2 server with apache PHP and am having trouble getting errors to show. I've copied all the website application files from a different as well as the folder structure and everything in /etc/httpd/. When I access my site, I get a 500 error, or a blank page. The logs are showing nothing http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9429616/apache-500-server-error-logs-showing-nothing at all, apart form logging the 500 error: [24/Feb/2012:17:33:25 +1100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 - "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1" 405 229 7176 My htaccess looks like this: ErrorDocument 404 /error.php php_flag display_errors on php_flag display_startup_errors on php_flag file_uploads on php_value error_reporting 6143 php_value max_input_time 60 php_value post_max_size 8M php_value upload_max_filesize 2M ~ So errors are turned on... Start of PHP file has: error_reporting(-1); ini_set('display_errors', 1); ini_set('display_startup_errors', 1); and php.ini has error_reporting set to E_ALL. ... yet I am getting errors on the screen for some things (such as not closing a string), but my issues are a bit bigger than i think and i have no idea where to start debugging! So i guess my question is- how do I start debugging a 500 server error? php apache share|improve this question asked Feb 24 '12 at 11:02 Lock 3,01363165 closed as off topic by bahrep, hjpotter92, sylvanaar, rorra, Neolisk Apr 14 '13 at 14:35 Questions on Stack Overflow are expected to relate to programming within the scope defined by the community. I've migrated a couple sites to a new server now, and they are now working fine. I've moved all the files and have the database loaded for a third site, and I get "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request" when I visit the domain with a web browser, but there is nothing in /var/log/apache2/error_log and although the vhost config file says to use the /var/log/apache2/[domain]/error_log for error logging for this domain, there is nothing there either. The other two sites were drupal installs. This one is a wordpress install. Any ideas? This can happen if the .htaccess files in your DokuWiki directory use settings or trigger actions which are not supported by your Apache server config. If you're not running the server yourself, but are registered with a webhost, you can either ask your webhost to enable the options in question, or just comment them out in the htaccess files. The options which are known to cause an Error 500 are: Options -Indexes as well as all settings related to Apache's mod_rewrite option to pretty-print URLs. The latter are disabled by default. It may also occur when setting very permissive file permissions (777) and your hoster added some security checks to avoid this. Try to lower permissions. Another problem can occur if you're using .htaccess files using UTF-8 codification with Byte-Order Mark (BOM). Reencode your .htaccess files properly without BOM to solve this. It may happen if you are using Fedora with SElinux and copied the dokuwiki files from your home directory. To correct it, run “restorecon -r .” as root on the website dokuwiki directory Some people reported a 500 error when creating new users or changing passwords on certain hosters. Try to change the passcrypt option from smd5 to md5. If you use discussion plugin and a 500 error occures after submit a comment, insert a recipient email address at notify. Maybe this is a bug in 2009-02-14. This error can also manifests itself as a PHP error. Try adding the c
