I'm really new to setting up web servers in general. I've got IIS 8 on Windows 8, and I'm trying to set up a little site locally, while doing some development. In IIS I choose Add Site, give a name, points to a location where I have a index.html file (I've tried different locations, latest in a c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test -folder) and otherwise use all default settings. However, when I try to browse to

localhost I get "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." I've verified the pool is started, and I've given IIS_IUSRS Full Control on the target folder I've search around but not found anything that solved my issue, and there's nothing helpfull in the EventLog or in the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR folder Could anyone tell me what's wrong? Thanks! iis http-error share|improve this question edited Nov 10 '12 at 14:42 asked Nov 10 '12 at 14:33 Andreas 1,33321019 4 Have you checked event viewer for more info? –Webplanet TFS Consulting Nov 11 '12 at 11:06 Hi. errors The Web server is effectively 'closed for repair'. It is still functioning minimally because it can at least respond ftp error 503 with a 503 status code, but full service is impossible i.e. the Web site is simply unavailable. There are a myriad possible reasons for this, but generally it is because of some human http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13322937/iis-http-error-503-the-service-is-unavailable intervention by the operators of the Web server machine. You can usually expect that someone is working on the problem, and normal service will resume as soon as possible. Please contact the system operators of the Web site (e.g. your ISP) to determine why the service is down. They will be in a much better position to help you than we are for this type of http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E503.html error. 503 errors in the HTTP cycle Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with the Web server: Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site (the site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs). Open an IP socket connection to that IP address. Write an HTTP data stream through that socket. Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information. This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '503'. Nov 12, 2011 02:17 AM|HCamper|LINK Hi, Start with Mike's Trouble Shooting guide http://forums.iis.net/t/1144449.aspx. The first steps are Turn On and Enable "Failed Requests Tracing" guide for ASP Errors http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/565/using-failed-request-tracing-to-troubleshoot-classic-asp-errors/. The use Mike's Guide to track the problems with the Reports directory and code. Common problem is the "Application Pools" http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/application-pool-identities/process mode. The solution depends on your fixing the Reports code permissions Application Pool Settings which are leading to the 503 error and failures. You may need to load the Reports code in Visual Studio Web Developer to debug and fix the code failures. Why haveyou let this go for 3 months ?
