of 503-Temporary Overload and other errors Mon 8th Sep '08, 9:59am My website has been running more or less well for 3 months, today I began getting a number of Temporary Overload - 503 errors... Before these started the entire site was down for about 15 minutes with the following error on all PHP pages: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 262144 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 311296 bytes) in /home/juot/public_html/forums/index.php on line 468 Obviously the exact numbers and line numbers were different on various php pages but I couldn't access anything, including the admin menu. I contacted the hosting company and they gave me this reponse and closed the trouble ticket: Hello, It seems that the issue with your website is caused because the memory_limit set for the execution of a component includes on your front page is exhausted. However this limit is lower than the memory_limit set globally on the server which is 96MB. You may check the global memory limit via the following URL: The error should be caused because you have different memory_limit set in one of the your components scripts. I have tried to find which is the exact scripts but unfortunately to no avail. You should review your scripts and remove or change any lines which has the memory_limit set to a different value than the global o

503 error for several different reasons. For example, if a web server is overloaded with traffic, it 503 service unavailable no server is available to handle this request. may not be able to handle new visitors. When you access a webpage on an overloaded web server, you may be greeted by a 503 error message instead http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum/vbulletin-legacy-versions-products/legacy-vbulletin-versions/vbulletin-3-7-questions-problems-and-troubleshooting/291291-getting-a-lot-of-503-temporary-overload-and-other-errors of seeing the original webpage content. Similarly, if a server is processing a large amount of data, such as memory or CPU-intensive script, there may not be enough resources to process incoming requests. This may also produce a 503 error. The error message "503 Service Unavailable" may also indicate a service is simply not running on a web http://pc.net/helpcenter/answers/503_http_error_code server. For example, if you try to access Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) on a Microsoft Exchange Server, but the web access service is not running, you may see a 503 status code. This may happen if either the System Attendant or Information Store services are not running on an Exchange server. 503 status codes are temporary, meaning they will stop appearing once a server can handle incoming requests and the necessary services are running. Therefore, if you come across a 503 error on a website, chances are, if you wait a few minutes and try loading the webpage again, it will work correctly. If several hours go by and you still see a 503 error, it may be helpful to email the webmaster (if possible) to notify him or her of the error. The generic status text associated with a 503 error is "Service Unavailable." It can mean a wide variety of things. The most common reasons this generic text appears include: The origin server generated a 503 service unavailable 503 error and Fastly passed it through as is. The origin returned a 503 error without a response header, so Fastly used the default response. The status line of the HTTP response from the origin was not parseable. VCL code was run that used the "error" statement without an appropriate response status (e.g., error 503 instead of error 503 "_broken thing_"). The following list provides the most common non-generic, standardized 503 responses and basic explanations for each. WARNING: If you are seeing 503 errors, do not purge all cached content. Purge all overrides stale-if-error and increases the requests to your origin server, which could result in additional 503 errors. 503 Backend Read Error This error typically appears if a timeout error occurs when Fastly cache servers attempt to fetch content from your origins. It can also be due to a variety of transient network issues that might cause a read to fail (e.g., router failovers, packet loss) or an origin overload. Benchmarking your backend response times. Many outside factors cause backends response times to vary. Repeated, consistent Backend Read Errors frequently can be prevented by changing your backend timeout settings in the Fastly application. Start by running the following command to estimate response time for benchmarking purposes: curl -s -w "%{time_total}\n" -o /dev/null http://example.co

Reason: HTTP status 503: The service is temporarily overloaded. Windows Server > WSUS Question 0 Sign in to vote This error has been recurring for about 3 weeks and I'm not sure where to look for answers. First question: what service is temporarily overloaded? I've cleared the downloaded files directory and done a WSUS reset on the server, but it still returns an Event ID 364 error in the application log. No new files have been downloaded. The WSUSContent subdirectories have no executables in them, but only either tmp or txt files. The only other event IDs logged in the event logs are 10000 (WSUS is working correctly). Should I be looking at our firewall permissions? Wednesday, November 02, 2011 6:28 PM Reply | Quote Answers 1 Sign in to vote If the WSUSContent subdirectories do not have any EXE or CAB files in them, this would suggest that some device is blocking the WSUS Server's ability to download content files and not properly reporting that behavior (resulting in the misleading HTTP 503 error). Do you have a WebFilter that the WSUS Server is being routed through? Do you have a Proxy Server that the WSUS Server is being routed through? Are there any entries in the AppEventLog with regards to specfic file download events?Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA, MCSA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2011) My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Lawrence.Garvin My Blog: http://onsitechsolutions.spaces.live.com Marked as answer by gb2839 Thursday, November 03, 2011 5:26 PM Wednesday, November 02, 2011 9:25 PM Reply | Quote Moderator 1 Sign in to vote Lawrence, The real answer turned out to be, after our firewall administrator checked the firewall logs, that the MS update download site had changed its DNS settings. This has happened before, and we've run into this issue before. Our firewalls
