Error 58: Unable to write to boot sector Started by shurn23 , Sep 18 2007 07:05 PM Please log in to reply #1 shurn23 Posted 18 September 2007 - 07:05 PM shurn23 New Member Member 1 posts Hello, Here is my situation. I have an IBM Thinkpad T40 with windows xp and sp2 that suddenly stopped being able to boot windows yeilding the blue screen that says: "unmountable_boot_volume.... stop: 0x000000ED (0x082F53E30, 0XC0000015, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)" I have a external case and USB hook-up for the hard drive so I removed it and tried to hook it up to another PC and save the data from the HD that won't boot, but it just freezes the other computer. After searching on the web I found a few options as far as bootable cds (bart pe and knoppix) and tried them. Both worked well, but I only found that knoppix was able to access all my HD data. So, I copied all the data off the HD using a USB flash drive and put the data on another PC temporarily in hopes that I could use my product recovery cds to restore windows on the T40. When I boot to the recovery cd and go through all the dialogues to restore the computer right after it starts the error "Error 58: Unable to write to boot sector" comes up and there is something about virus software that might be running. I noticed in another post that there can be a virus check set in the bios, but I looked through all the options in the bios utility and saw nothing dealing with virus protection. Anyone have any solutions, or an idea. 0 Advertisements #2 Neil Jones Posted 19

I have been backing up my full C drive regularly to a removable drive using DRIVE IMAGE 5.0 for a long time without any problems. All of a sudden I am getting an error message just as the backup is about http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/171242-error-58-unable-to-write-to-boot-sector/ to start, and backup stops. Error 58: "Unable to write to the boot sector. Virus protection software may be running." I have been using Norton AV for as long as I have been using this type of backup and have never had this problem. I didn't think NAV would remain active when then system was switched to DOS, but I did try disabling it http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/139550-32-drive-image-backup-blocked-error before running the backup and had the same problem. I am using Win98SE if that is pertinent. This backup scheme has saved me much agony twice, and I would really like to get an answer to the problem. Any suggestions as to the cause and cure would really be appreciated. Every time I plug it in, a pop up comes up that says: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. I opened up Disk Utility and tried to erase it, in the hope of making it readable. It shows the loading bar and after a couple minutes, a pop-up appears and says: Disk Erase failed with the error: Unable to write to the last block of the device. So I remove it, and try again with no avail. I even tried using terminal and the diskutil eraseVolume command and I get: newfs_hfs: write (sector 0): Invalid argument Mounting disk Could not mount disk2 with name (null) after erase Error: -69832: File system formatter failed So I tookit out, and tried again with diskutil randomDisk just to see if I couldeven write on it. and then I got this: Started erase on disk2 Error: -69879: Couldn't open disk Underlying error: 2: POSIX reports: No such file or directory Does anyone have any idea how I can make this drive readable? partition usb share|improve this question edited Feb 16 '12 at 1:54 Daniel♦ 22.8k21109164 asked Feb 8 '12 at 5:57 0x60 76118 Do you have turned
