This was definitely less traumatic than any other fix. This problem seems to come and go, supporting the thesis that there is some kind bug that can be eliminated temporarily, but always comes back eventually. –user240389 Jul 24 '13 at 13:29 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 19 down vote Changing the NTLM settings in the Local Policies did not work for me. What did work is mentioned here: link text ...you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly. Set the following registry key to ‘1′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache and set the following registry key to ‘3′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size After changing the two registry settings, I simply restarted the "Server" service in Windows 7 and now the sharing is working fine. share|improve this answer edited Oct 7 '10 at 17:47 answered May 28 '10 at 17:57 Glen Little 6271719 Excellent, this f

GPedit.msc 2. Windows Settings. Expand Local Policies and select Security Options 3. Alternate : Type secpol.msc to get editor up then 4. Locate Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level in the list and double-click it. 5. http://superuser.com/questions/47382/system-error-58-while-accessing-shares-on-windows-7-from-xp Change the setting from Send NTMLv2 response only to Send LM & NTLM use NTLMv2 session if negotiated You may need to run gpupdate or reboot the Vista. Case 2: It could a security software. The client get these error message: "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation" and "Not Enough Server Storage Is Available to Process This Command." After removing AVG, it works now. Case 3: We had a similar http://www.chicagotech.net/troubleshooting/systemerror58.html case. is only happening when accessing a Win7 x64 system from Windows XP (x86) clients. When using other Win7 x64 systems, there are no problems. Resolution: Here's the solution for changes needed to Win7 to allow XP (pre Vista) clients to connect to shares and printers on the Win7 machine: 1) Start - Run (Windows - R) - GPedit.msc 2) In the Group Policy Editor window that opens, in the left pane, expand: Local Computer Policy - Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings 3) click on "IP Security Policies on Local Computer" under that 4) In right pane, double click on SecNet RAS/VPN Client POlicy (the only entry) 5) In the new properties dialog that opens, in the Rules tab, scroll to the bottom of the list 6) check "" Default response (earlier viersions of Windows Only) 7) click OK Case 4: The solution that I have found is with SMB2... Apparently it doesn't co-operate well with XP (and older) systems, because they only support SMB1, and Win7 does not automatically switch from SMB2 to SMB1 when it's supposed to. NOTE: This is just what I read in another thread on another forum (I'll try to find the link [I think this was it]: XP drops folders shared on Vista PC - Windows)

2012 by admin If you've ever tried connecting to a Windows 7 SMB share from a Windows XP or 2003 computer, you may notice you cannot connect to the server. Being the savvy person you are, you: Check http://sigkillit.com/tag/net-use-system-error-58/ the share and NTFS permissions on the Windows 7 Share Run gpresult on your XP/2003 machine and confirm you are a member of the correct groups Try connecting through start->Search and enter \\windows7 and get an error What! You http://serverfault.com/questions/69049/system-error-58-while-accessing-shares-on-windows-7-from-windows-xp cannot even see the server and it's shares??? You check the Windows 7 firewall and ensure file/print sharing is allowed It's even enabled on the connected network (domain/home/public) Your IP subnet is even allowed You break out the command error 58 line and run net use z: \\windows7\share but get a System Error 58 WHAT GIVES!!! The problem is Windows 7 uses NTLMv2 and XP/2003 use LM & NTLM.  To resolve this issue, do the following on the Windows 7 computer: Run GPedit.msc Expand Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options Open the properties for Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Set the value to: Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session if negotiated Run Services.msc Restart the Server system error 58 service You can now map your drive from your XP/2003 box to your Windows 7 computer!
