I am getting Error 733 when trying to make a VPN connection to a Windows XP Pro machine using tcp/ip. I am trying to connect from a client that is behind the same router, so I know it is not an issue of not having ports properly fowarded. I have TCP/IP binded to both the VPN Server and Cleint. I can connect using IPX, but some of the computers I will want to connect from don't have this prototcol installed. Any help greatly appreciated. To New Topics Error 733: the PPP control protocol for this network protocol is not available on the server. Resolution: 1) Ensure that the TCP/IP protocol is installed on your RAS server and that the TCP/IP protocol is selected in the Server Settings of http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/143566-45-error-solutions-posts the Network Configuration option of the Remote Access Setup dialog. 2) If you have the "Use DHCP to assign remote TCP/IP client addresses" option selected for the TCP/IP protocol in the RAS Server Settings, then ensure that you have installed DHCP and that it is http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error733.htm not disabled. 3) Ensure that all of the bindings for TCP/IP are enabled in the Bindings tab of the Network dialog of the Control Panel. Be sure to inspect the TCP/IP Protocol and WINS Client (TCP/IP) bindings for all adapters, all protocols, and all services. If the TCP/IP bindings are corrupt, you may have to reinstall TCP/IP and or RAS in order to clean up the bindings. I presume the authentication and tus the inital authorisation went thru ok so i am presuming that it is not a problem on the client side. what am i missing? some sites say to reinstall the bindings on tcp/ip is this advisable and how do i do it? BTW If i install ipx/spx it works fine ...if i leave this on what are the implications? is pptp sufficent or should i install ipsec based vpn...are there any good (free) client/ error 733 on server ipsec vpn out there? any help would be appreciated cheers Raz raz, Nov 2, 2005 #1 Sponsor sting06 Joined: Sep 28, 2005 Messages: 108 What server OS are you using and how is that configured to handle the 1723 traffic? sting06, Nov 2, 2005 #2 raz Thread Starter Joined: Jul 13, 2002 Messages: 250 Thanks I am using XP home as the PPTP/VPN server and has been set up as a vpn incomming connection. I have a netgear router which has pptp/l2p/ipsec passthrough enabled and port 1723 has been forwarded to the XP home computer. I have also opened port 5900 VNC and also forwarded that to the XP home vpn server which works fine. the xphome incomming connection has vpn enabled and ip enabled to assign ip addresses from dhcp and also let user connect to local network. any ideas cheers Raz raz, Nov 2, 2005 #3 raz Thread Starter Joined: Jul 13, 2002 Messages: 250 Done a little research on the net..copule of questions: 1.....microsoft say "Ensure that all of the bindings for TCP/IP are enabled in the Bindings tab of the Network dialog of the Control Panel. games, and for that reason I'm trying to make network play possible(this particular old game is "Blood", heard of it?). Anyway, old games were run through the IPX protocol, and this is where I get some difficulties. I have set up my router for pptp passthrough, opened the required ports, and created a vpn-server on my machine using windows XP(SP2). I have also set up a vpn-client using Windows XP, and when i try to connect, i CAN get connected if i want to, and everything seems to work. However, upon connection, I get an error: "TPC/IP CP connected successfully. IPX/SPX or compatible CP reported error 733: A connection to the remote computer could not be completed." In other words, it seems that I can't get the IPX/SPX protocol to work through my VPN PPTP connection. How to fix this? anyone? I'll admit I havent been exposed to novell for quite a few years now but as I recall IPX/SPX is NOT an internet protocol. It can be routed through routers in a Lan but NOT on a Wan to the internet (it will work on a Wan if the Wan is on a point to point private connection). The last I also remember of novell they were just adding a tcp/ip protocol. __________________________________________________ tiny_1 5 posts Forum MembersPosted 9 years, 305 days ago Spoke to some people at Microsoft Norway, who meant that it should be possible to create an IPX-tunnel. I'll continue my research, and update the thread if i discover something(just for those who might be interested)... exTI 3636 posts ModeratorsPosted 9 years, 305 days ago This may sound stupid but is that game server still up and running and is it still using ipx/spx protocol? __________________________________________________ tiny_1 5 posts Forum MembersPosted 9 years, 305 days ago hehe, there is no game server. its and old fps game(built using Ken Silverman's Build-engine, as is Duke Nukem 3D), in which multiplayer is based upon usage of the ipx-protocol. haven't you heard of Blood?? exTI 3636 posts ModeratorsPosted 9 years, 305 days ago No I haven't but I dont play games on computers (afraid I may get hooked on them). I also quit overclocking years ago when I saw little speed increases to risk damaging hardware (which I've done).there is no game server Then you shouldnt need it to through the router. O
