I get to the point where the computer is being registered on the network and then I get an error: TCP/IP CP Reported Error 733: The connection could not be completed because your computer and the remote computer could not negotiate PPP control protocols. I normally (using default windows vpn connections) change the security of the VPN to the following. On security, I select Advanced, then settings and change it to optional security. I only do this on problem connections. If that works, you can try and tighten it up again, by matching the requirements of the VPN server on the Client. This error is generated when there is an incompatibility between server and client in negotiating a secure connection. Start by checking the properties of the vpn connect

> Operating Systems > Windows XP > Windows XP Work Remotely > VPN - Error 733 VPN - Error 733 Posted: 09-22-2003, 04:29 AM Glenn d Guest Posts: n/a Show Printable Version Email this Page Post Comment Hello, I set up an incoming connection to my local computer ( XP Home) that isusing a cable modem connection. For the preliminary test I used my work laptop ( Dell running XP Professional , 3 mths old) to see if I could dial up (56k modem) via the Internet through VPN connection. I created a VPN connection for this test and used the IP Address of the computer I was connecting to. All firewalls were disabled. The result was; the https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21202568/TCP-IP-Error-733-in-Windows-XP.html computer would connect, verify password, begin registering and the give an error of 733 which indicates the PPP protocol is not correct between the two machines. I trying enabling and disabling almost all configurations suggested but no luck as of yet. I did see in the event log a note stating it was not possible to issue an IP address to the incoming connection. I was able to ping the IP address and also the "no-ip" address I set http://www.realgeek.com/forums/vpn-error-733-a-36695.html up without errors. I did not enable to no- ip program while doing the basic test. I will be trying to communicate from a remote computer in the near future and this was the first try, NO LUCK.The remote will be using a cable modem. I am not sure this will make a difference. If someone could shed some light as to a possible remedy, that would be great. After enabling Incoming Connections on your machine, did you try and give it some time for the machine to gather a list of IP's to hand out (1-2 mins) before connecting? To verify if indeed this is a DHCP IP issue, On the machine with Incoming Connections enabled. Configure it for static ip (specify a range of IP addresses) Incoming connection properties -> Networking --> TCP/IP Properties --> create a range of IP address to hand out. See if you are able to connect successfully Wai-O Hui -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
