We're ignoring time uncertainty, assuming that the timing calibration of

the camera is as accurate as we need it to be. There are two factors that affect the distance uncertainty: 1) your judgment of where to place the cursor on the ball and http://www.batesville.k12.in.us/physics/GA_Notes/index.htm 2) your determination of the scale factor. One way to estimate the absolute uncertainty in cursor placement is to judge for yourself what fraction of a racquetball's diameter of ~5 cm you could be off. This may be more for the early points than the later ones. Base your estimate on points in the middle of the fall. The absolute uncertainty in the scale factor results primarily http://courses.ncssm.edu/aphys/labs/vlab1/vlab1_error_analysis.htm from uncertainty in cursor placement on the foam blocks. Some uncertainty may also arise from parallax distortion in filming the scene, since points away from the center of the field of view are farther from the camera. However, this source of error was minimized by placing the camera far from the subject and zooming in as much as possible. For now, we will ignore any parallax distortion error. Thus, the percentage uncertainty in the scale factor will depend only on the absolute uncertainty in determining the end points and the distance between those end points. The greater the distance you selected, the less the percentage will be. Note that the percentage uncertainty in the scale factor affects all your distance measurements. Your total percentage uncertainty in distance is the sum of the percentage uncertainties for factors 1) and 2). (Why do you add the percentage uncertainties rather than the absolute uncertainties?) One wrinkle here: The percentage uncertainty for factor 1) decreases as the distance of fall increases. Does this mean that you have to calculate the total percentage uncertainty for each data point? The answer depends on your goal. If your goal is to convince the physics research commun

Trending Now Carmelo Anthony Rita Ora Yolanda Hadid Yale University Credit Cards Health Insurance Serena Williams Oil Change Coupons Emily Blunt Monica Lewinsky Answers Best Answer: The way I've always shown the degree of uncertainty on a graph is as follows..................plot all the data points on a graph................take each data point in turn and review what the uncertainty (possible error) of the point could be.......measurement error, test condition error, what ever, and derive an overall statistical possible error. Suppose the data point was at ( 7, 12) and the possible error was + 11.2 % and -9.6 %............The point would then be bounded by a bar, the end points of which would be (7.78, 10.85). Usually I would tthen try to establish a 'best-fit' curve for the original data points, and the + and - points. Such a treatment is not rigorously statistically accurate, but is acceptable for most occasions.
