range of the worksheet. I usually put these values in the same table as the actual X and Y values Manually Defining Custom Error Bars Sample Data and Charts Suppose we have the following data: X and Y values, plus extra columns with positive and negative error bar values for both X and Y directions. The data is set up so that, for example, cells C2 and D2 have the values how to add error bars in excel 2015 for the positive and negative horizontal (X) error bars for the point defined by X and Y values in A2 and B2. Cells E2 and F2 have the values for the positive and negative vertical (Y) error bars for this point. The series is plotted using all the data at once, with X in A2:A6 and Y in B2:6. The error bars are also drawn using all the error bar data at once: C2:C6 and D2:D6 for horizontal and E2:E6 and F2:F6 for vertical. The chart itself is easy: create an XY chart using the data in columns A and B. The protocols for adding custom error bars differ between Classic Excel and new Excel. After following the appropriate protocol below, the chart will have custom error bars on each data point, based on the additional columns of data. This chart shows just the Y error bars, to show clearly that each point has custom values different from other points: This chart shows the X and Y error bars: Important Note A single custom error bar value cannot be added to a single data point, and custom error bar values cannot be added to a series of data points one point at a time. I have data that looks like http://peltiertech.com/custom-error-bars-in-excel-charts/ this: Median Min Max Na 0.032617 0.000106 0.387142 Cl 0.0265 0.000017 0.282087 Ca 0.000524 0.0000047 0.0059883 K 0.005523 0.000007 0.038365 Mg 0.0000823 0.0000001 0.0018515 PO4 0.00031 0.00002 0.00105 HCO3 0.001655 0.000262 0.003048 I'm doing a line plot with the first column as the categorical x axis, and the second column, median, on the y-axis, which is logarithmic. I then set up error bars using the values in the min and max column (columns 3 and 4 above) as custom http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?t=491440 values in the "error amount" part of the format data series dialog. The max values would be for the plus side of the error bar, and the min values are for the minus side. I thought this would work perfectly, however, only the plus side of the error bar is showing up, not the minus side. And in the format data series dialog I DO have it set to show both. So, I was wondering if anyone had run into this before, and if there is a reason and a solution. I want the minus part of the error bars to show. For negative error, use (mean - min), and for positive error, use (max - mean). - Jon ------- Jon Peltier, Microsoft Excel MVP Peltier Technical Services Tutorials and Custom Solutions http://PeltierTech.com/ _______

I know how to edit and format the error bars, but nothing I have changed fixes my problem: The error bars "join up" to give diagonal lines between between my columns. I have NEVER had this issue in previous versions of Excel. If I plot the error bars in pre-2007 excel, they're fine, until I open them in excel-2007. If error bars excel I remove the error bars, and plot them afresh in excel-2007, I get the same problem. It doesn't happen to every error bar, just some of them, for no apparent reason. How can I stop them doing this?
