for error bars is to show variability in the measures which are plotted in the chart. There are other ways to use error bars to embellish Excel charts, as listed at what are error bars the end of this article. This article was written based on the error bar system in how to add error bars in excel mac Excel 97 through 2003. If you are using Excel 2007, you will have noticed a lot of differences from earlier versions, particularly in

charting. Error bars have been changed substantially, to the extent that Excel 2007 users have had a lot of problems finding and applying error bars. I have written a new article about Error Bars in Excel 2007. Adding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Etko-slowk Error Bars Error bars are easy to add to a chart series. Double click on the series, or select the series and press CTRL+1, to open the Format Series dialog. Most chart types allow Y error bars, and XY Scatter types allow X error bars as well. The Error Bar dialogs, shown below, are not at all complicated. These dialogs allow you to display no error bars, positive error bars, negative error bars, and error bars in both http://peltiertech.com/Excel/ChartsHowTo/ErrorBars.html directions. There are several ways to enter values: fixed values, a percentage of the point's value, a number of standard deviations, the standard error of the plotted points, and custom values. As a means of explaining these options, each will be shown using the following simple data set, which results in a basic series of points. You should make up your own data set to practice making error bars. C D E F 2 X Y Xerr Yerr 3 1.6 1.97 0.897 0.897 4 2.51 3.1 0.732 0.732 5 3.55 2.79 0.633 0.633 6 3.83 3.96 0.6 0.6 7 5.47 4.4 0.633 0.633 8 5.77 5.72 0.732 0.732 9 6.89 7.2 0.897 0.897 10 7.76 7.65 1.128 1.128 11 8.78 8.34 1.425 1.425 This is a simple XY Scatter chart of the sample data set, without error bars. This shows our sample chart with positive and negative X and Y error bars, with a fixed value of 0.75. This shows our chart with positive and negative X and Y error bars, using a percentage of 12%. As the data values increase from the bottom left to the top right, the length of the error bars, 12% of the value, also increases. Here is our chart with error bars of one standard deviation. This chart differs from the rest, because the error bars do not start at the data po
Peltier Peltier Technical Services, Inc., Copyright © 2016. Microsoft has made a number of changes to how you use error bars in Excel 2007. I wrote an article some time ago, which covered how to use Error Bars in Excel Charts, for versions 97 through 2003. http://peltiertech.com/error-bars-in-excel-2007/ Now it's well past time for an update. Warning: This is a long post. It contains a lot of pictures though to keep you entertained, and near the end there's a cool utility you can download and use for free. Review http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/how-do-i-do-different-error-bars-within-a-series.3690909/ of Error Bars in Classic Excel It's easy to add error bars in Excel 97 through 2003. Bring up the Format Series dialog, by double clicking on the series, by right clicking on the series and choosing Selected Object, by selecting error bars the series and choosing Selected Data Series from the Format menu, or by selecting the series and clicking the shortcut, Ctrl+1 (numeral one). The dialog has a tab for Y Error Bars, and if it's an XY data series, there is also a tab for X error bars. From this dialog you can assign values to the error bars, such as a fixed value, a percentage of the data point value, a couple of statistical measures, and custom values from a worksheet range. how to add You can also assign the direction of the error bars (plus, minus, both, or neither). One nice feature is that the custom error bar value selection controls are right on the same dialog as everything else. To format error bars, you first select them, then bring up the dialog with a double click, a right click, the Ctrl+1 shortcut, or the Format menu. In the chart below I have clicked once, which selects both X and Y error bars in an XY chart. The dialog has three tabs. Any changes you make on the Patterns tab affects both X and Y error bars. The other two tabs allow you to reapply error bar values. Rather than selecting both sets of error bars in this chart, I have clicked once to select both X and Y error bars, then again to reduce my selection to just the Y error bars. The Format Error Bars dialog now only has a Patterns tab and a Y Error Bars tab. If you change any format on the Patterns tab it only affects the error bars you selected before opening the dialog. Changes to Error Bars in Excel 2007 It is harder to apply error bars in Excel 2007. There is no convenient tab on the Format Series dialog. The Error Bar tab(s) as well as the tabs for Data Label, Up/Down Bars, High/Low Lines, and other features have been removed to make them more discoverable, at least that's w
sets of data, and have used the mean to make a column chart. I now need to add standard deviation error bars, which will be different for each mean. The only way I have seen to do this so far is by switching the data over the axis (ie, clicking "Switch row/column") but this clumps my bars together and gets rid of the axis labels for the two columns. Is there a way to get different error bars without doing this? Helen, Dec 8, 2008 #1 Advertisements Shane Devenshire Guest Hi, You did not say what version of Excel you are using - Select the series and choose Format, Selected Data Series, Y - Error Bars, choose the Standard Deviation option. Repeat for the other series. -- If this helps, please click the Yes button Cheers, Shane Devenshire "Helen" wrote: > I have two sets of data, and have used the mean to make a column chart. Shane Devenshire, Dec 9, 2008 #2 Advertisements Helen Guest Thanks, but I'm using 2007. Sorry I forgot to say that! If I'm right, the explanation given works on earlier versions but not 2007. Wish I'd bought an older version now!
