I have been facing this problem for a month now and I have tried every possible option. It was working very fine untill then for past 5 months. Problem: "There was an error joining the airport network" The problem comes only when I make my network secure. If I make it open, it works fine.. I dont want to keep my network open and unsecure, so the problem keeps bothering me. Things I have tried. 1. I have tried removing all the old passwords in the keychain and deleting all the previous networks it remembered. no difference, same error.. 2. I have tried several other things suggested in different forums and articles, nothing really gave any results.. 3. I finally got my OS reloaded with erase and Install option.. still the same error message comes.. I have my Interferece robustness on and other PC computer connected to the same network works fine.. I have even tried changing the router from Netgear to Linksys, nothing really worked.. Please give me some input on the issue and possible cause of the problem. If anyone else have the same issue, kindly share

Both were not working and thanks as always to your pages I got them both going. I bought a couple of PCI Airport cards for them and I'm getting the same problem from both machines irrespective of error joining the which card is in which machine. The cards can be seen by the systems, both have 9.52 showing in the Firmware info but neither card can see networks that are available. When I put in the network details thru Internet Connect I get the same message whichever card or laptop combination. 'There was an error joining the Airport network 'virginmedia*******' All my other Airports join Virgin broadband but this is the oldest machine I have tried to do it with, is that significant? I have a home wifi network broadcast by the combination modem/wireless router installed by the phone company (it's Verizon Fios if that matters). Our Windows 7 notebook, and various iOS devices, can connect fine. However, the iBook will only connect if the connection is set to no security, or set to 40 bit WEP. We don't want to do this for obvious reasons. At some point in the past, it did work with the network set to WPA2. The local wifi networks show up in the AirPort menu. The interesting thing, and one that I hope is relevant, is that when I chose my home network from the AirPort menu, it detects as WPA Personal. The router is most definitely set to WPA2 personal (it's hybrid 802.11b and .g). Typing in the password never enables the OK button, which I believe means the password was not accepted (it shouldn't be, since it's not WPA personal). If I try to connect using "Other..." from the AirPort menu, and force it to WPA2 personal, I get "There was an error joining the AirPort network ".....". Any further troubleshooting steps? I'm a lot more familiar with Windows. osx wireless-networking share|improve this question asked Jul 11 '11 at 0:07 RetiredGrandmother 612 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote As I recall, iBook G4's had the AirPort Extreme (802.11g) card, whereas iBook G3s had the original 802.11b AirPort card. So it's good you have a G4 because that card was capable of WPA and WPA2, whereas the older card could barely do original WPA. Note, however, that the AirPort Extreme card in your iBook G4 was only certified compliant with the original WPA, not WPA2
