The site is secured by Windows authentication and that iis custom error page for all errors works fine: When users go to the site, they are asked for username/password and get through if authenticated. If users click Cancel or mistype password 3 times, they are shown 401 error page: Now I would like to show custom page explaining how to log-in. So I go to Error pages, select status code 401.2 and point it to the page I would like to display: Then make sure the custom errors are turned on for everybody. And kaa-boom! Authentication does not work any more, users are not presented with the password prompt. As documentation says, Windows Authentication works by sending 401 reply first, then browser asks user to provider credentials and then they work out what to do next. What happens here: on first request for the page IIS tries to send 401-header, but notices that web.config says "on 401 redirect to this page". And instead of authentication, it just gives the redirect page. I've tried replacing 401, 401.1, 401.2 - made no difference. What am I doing wrong and how to give custom page on user authenticat

Solved Custom 401 error page with Windows authentication Posted on 2011-12-28 ASP.NET Visual Basic.NET Microsoft IIS Web Server 2 Verified Solutions 6 Comments 1,371 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-12 Hello Experts, I am working on an ASP.Net application and am running into a problem with custom error pages. The root directory of the application is secured using Windows authentication defined in the web.config file in that directory, and all users in the specified AD application users group are able to access those pages. I also have a subfolder in the root of the application that contains .aspx files for administrative functions of the application, and the web.config file in that directory is also set to use Windows authentication for the application administrators AD group. Now, when I connect to the site as a user of the application users group I am able to access all parts of the application that I should, and when I try to acces a part of the application that is limited to access by only the application administrators, I am presented with a login prompt as expected. However, upon failing to present valid credentials, I am presented with the generic Error 401.2 page from IIS, and I would like to present a custom page for this error. I have spent the day trying to get this to work out, amd have not had any success. From what I have found, the
