I have a new dell PC, Win XP Pro SP2. I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled IIS several times. I called dell who told me to call MS, who told me to call dell. 8 hours later, I https://forums.iis.net/t/856298.aspx?Problems+running+IIS+http+localhost+page+not+found+error still can not get IIS to work. I am very new to web programming, IIS and networking. I just want to load up ASP.net and learn, but before I do that I need to get IIS running. I am definately missing something. All looks like it is running fine, but when I try to test it with http://localhost, after what seems like an eternity, I get a page not found error. A friend tells me I should get the generic XP (localstart.asp) page. Can anyone help me. I appreciate it ... very very much! Thank you. A custom 404 error page, on the other hand, is a specially-designed page that delivers the same message but in a more helpful, user-friendly way that honors the brand. It can tell the visitor what’s going on and what to do next. It can even be crafted to save a sale. This post walks through the steps of setting up a custom error 404 page if you’re a small business administering your own IIS server either directly or through a hosting provider. How to Identify Your Web Server Photo by Marc Dubois (CC by ND-2.0) There are several popular (and many more besides) software programs used to store and host web pages, called servers. If you’re not sure which server you use, contact your web host and they’ll tell you. If they say it’s Apache — and it very well might be since it’s the most widely used server on the web — leave this post and read How to Configure a Custom 404 Error Page — Apache Server Edition. Inside the physical path I created an index.htm that has:
Test But I got the following error: "The page cannot be found". When I put the same index file inside the Web Site Default physical path, it works. I configured the new web site with the link above using the IP configuration and without a Host Header.' What should I do to troubleshoot this or is there an obvious configuration error? windows-server-2003 iis configuration share|improve this question edited Jul 6 '15 at 2:32 Joel Coel 10k74183 asked Jun 14 '12 at 15:01 Vinicius Ottoni 1418 can you explain what the physical path terms you are using are? –Jim B Jun 14 '12 at 15:21 1) IIS may be searching for that file in Default site because you have not specified host header. Since IIS does not know where to look for that file, it searches the first defined site with no host header. Do you see the same if all other sites (including Default site) are disabled? –LazyOne Jun 14 '12 at 15:21 2) It could be file permission issue (it really depends on your configuration) -- Default site has all required permissions while new site (and I assume new physical location) may not have enough access rights –LazyOne Jun 14 '12 at 15:23 @LazyOne 1) But Default Web Site doesn't have a Host Header (host header in IIS is "intranet.domain.com" for exemple) as well, right? –Vinicius Ottoni Jun 14 '12 at 17:13 @LazyOne 2) the physical path permissions of the Default Web Site is the same of the New Web Site. –Vinicius Ottoni Jun 14 '12 at 17:
