A custom 404 error page, on the other hand, is a specially-designed page that delivers the same message but in a more helpful, user-friendly way that honors the brand. It can tell the visitor what’s going on and what to do next. It can even be crafted to save a sale. This post walks through the steps of setting up a custom error 404 page if you’re a small business administering your own IIS server either directly or through a hosting provider. Aug iis custom error 14, 2009 10:35 AM|jeff@zina.com|LINK deepak_m can we have url rewrite in iis 6 similar to iis 7 using rewrite rules in web.config? Sure. But in IIS 7 all requests are processed through the ASP.NET pipeline (assuming you're not in the classic pipeline) so a non-aspx request will hit the web.config as well. In IIS 6, since a request is only passed to the ASP.NET DLL if it is a request for an ASP.NET page, nothing you do in ASP.NET can affect a non-ASP.NET request. Thus the default 404 page. The answer is easy, replace the IIS 404 page with your custom 404 page. Or upgrade your operating system to Server 2008. Jeff Have you Binged a solution before posting?
