The directory is protected by basic authentication and left alone works perfectly fine. Users entering the directory are prompted for a user and password. Clicking cancel or 3 wrong attempts takes them to the default 401 error page. Using, at first, the https://forums.iis.net/t/1170491.aspx IIS manager, and then playing with my own web.config file, I implemented what I thought was the simple way to define custom error messages:

I need to show a custom error message "You are not authorized to view the application", error page whenever an unauthorized user tries to access the application. Currently it shows the default 401 page with message - HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. How can I achieve this?
