The three main areas of improvement when compared to IIS 6.0 are Custom vs. Detailed error pages, better iis custom error pages configurability of custom errors, and language-specific custom errors. Custom vs. Detailed error In IIS iis custom error page not working 7.0, the term “custom error” is used to describe the error information a regular user will see when navigating to your

example of the custom error page for an HTTP 404 response: You’ll notice that the custom error page is simple and brief, with no extended information. The user is simply told that the page they requested could not be found. Alternately, here is the detailed version of the HTTP 404 response page: You’ll notice that the detailed page contains far more information than the custom version. By limiting the amount iis customerrors of information you send to remote users, you increase the security level of your IIS server; the less information about your server and the error condition that is sent to potentially malicious users, the better. Let’s look at the detailed error info more closely. Error Summary The information in the Error Summary section is essentially the same as the custom error page. Detailed Error Information This is where the new benefits of IIS 7.0’s detailed errors begin to shine. The detailed error section contains very low-level information about the error condition which administrators and developers can use to troubleshoot the problem. Most Likely Causes and Things You Can Try To help in the troubleshooting process, IIS 7.0 includes the most likely causes of the problem, and provides a list of steps you can try to resolve the issue. Links and More Information One of the coolest new features of IIS 7.0 is the “view more information” link in the detailed error pages. By clicking this link, the user will be taken to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article specific to the HTTP status code they just received. If a KB article doesn’t exist yet, the user will be taken to the general IIS 7.0 HTTP Status Code article (http://support.

on June 21, 2012 This blog post will explain how to configure custom iis custom 404 not working error pages in IIS (Internet Information Server). For this example we will be using IIS 7.5 which shipped with Windows Server iis 404 error page 2008 R2. If we configure .NET Error Pages at the site level, ASP.NET stores the settings in the site's web.config file. Since these settings are stored in the web.config file they are portable https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/webtopics/2008/05/27/iis-7-0-http-error-pages/ and can be easily moved to another server with the site's content. How to setup Custom Error Pages in IIS 7.5 Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Select your website. Note: This could also be set at the server level and applied to all sites on the server. DoubleClick on the ".NET Error Pages" icon. The .NET Error Pages features view will be displayed. Click the "Edit http://www.sherweb.com/blog/how-to-create-custom-error-pages-in-iis-7-5-with-asp-net/ Feature Settings" link to enable this feature. The "Edit Error Page Settings" dialog box will appear. In order to change the default mode, we must also specify a "Default Page". This page will be used for all status codes that are not otherwise defined. In our example we are using a generic custom error page to trap all other errors. Once you enter the absolute URL for the default error page click OK. Note: It may be a good idea to use a static HTML page here just in case ASP.NET is not functioning properly. By default server errors are shown when logged on locally to the IIS server and custom errors will only be used from remote sessions. We will want to change this to "On" if we are logged on locally to the IIS server. Otherwise, it will display detailed server errors, and not our custom error pages. Next we will explicitly define the 404 Error code. To get the browser to throw a 404 error, we pointed it to a file on the test site that does not exist. As you can see in the following image the friendly HTTP 404 error page was shown in IE9. A
