that the web container should forward control to an error page if an exception web.xml error-page exception-type occurs, include the following page directive at the beginning of your JSP page: <%@ page errorPage="file-name" %> The Duke’s Bookstore application page tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/template/preludeErrorPage.jspf contains
Web.xml Error-page Location
the directive: <%@ page errorPage="errorpage.jsp"%> The following page directive at the beginning of tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/error/errorpage.jsp indicates that it is serving as an error page: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> This directive makes an object of type javax.servlet.jsp.ErrorData available to the error page so that you can retrieve, interpret, and possibly display jsp error page tag information about the cause of the exception in the error page. You access the error data object in an EL (see Unified Expression Language) expression by way of the page context. Thus, ${pageContext.errorData.statusCode} retrieves the status code, and ${pageContext.errorData.throwable} retrieves the exception. You can retrieve the cause of the exception using this expression: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} For example, the error page for Duke’s Bookstore is as follows: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/fmt" prefix="fmt" %>
: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} Note – You can also define error pages for the WAR that contains a JSP page. If error pages are defined for both the WAR and a JSP page, the JSP page’s error page takes precedence. (1) How do I create a JSP error page to handle exceptions? Author: Deron Eriksson Description: This Java tutorial describes servlet error page how to create a JSP error page to handle exceptions. Tutorial created using: Windows XP || JDK 1.5.0_09 || Eclipse Web Tools Platform 2.0 (Eclipse 3.3.0) || Tomcat 5.5.20 Page: 1 2> https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19316-01/819-3669/bnahi/index.html When an exception is thrown in your web application and it is not caught, you will typically see the result featuring the exception displayed in your browser window, as shown here: Rather than displaying the above default page when an exception occurs, you can redirect the user to a custom-written error page for a particular type of exception. You can do this via the error-page element http://www.avajava.com/tutorials/lessons/how-do-i-create-a-jsp-error-page-to-handle-exceptions.html in web.xmlW, in which you can specify an exception-type and the location of the resource where a user should be sent if an error occurs. In this example, I specified the exception-type as java.lang.Throwable so that all exceptions would be sent to the error.jsp page.

The app only has a handful of pages right now, though it is growing. As of now, I dont have anything that shows users errors. For example, if the database connection fails, the page is just blank. I'm curious what the best practices are error handling? jsp error page Should I print out a stack trace? Should all errors goto a default error page? Any advice or reference material would be appreciated. As you might tell, this is kind of new to me. Would make sense to show more information on error on an intranet than on the Internet. –developerwjk Dec 4 '13 at 19:11 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted For errors that are considered to be unrecoverable (such as database connectivity problems), these sorts of errors are typically caught at the top-most level within the application and dealt with in a single place. Many frameworks will convert these to unchecked exeptions to avoid intermediate layers having to deal with them. For these unrecoverable exceptions, typically you'd display a user-friendly and fairly generic error page to the user and send a stacktrace (with more detailed information) to a log file - for interrogation by system administrators and/or developers.
