Following Follow Storage If you've administered or grub rescue customized Linux long enough you've no doubt created a situation at some point where, during the boot process, that GRUB throws an error. We're going to discuss some of these situations below along with ways to work through them. If a file name or partition in the GRUB configuration file is incorrect GRUB won't be able to find critical error unknown filesystem files such as the Linux kernel. For instance if the root directive points to something other than the /boot directory GRUB will throw one of the following errors:
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
Error 27: Unrecognized command
Error while parsing number
Cannot mount selected partition
If the GRUB configuration file is completely missing you will see the following:
grub>
If you find yourself at this prompt you can find a list of available commands by hitting the tab key. The first thing that you are going to want to do in any of these cases is check and make sure that your root directive is correct. To do this, at the grub prompt, use the find command to locate the GRUB configuration file. Your search would begin something like this:
grub> find (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf
where hd0,0 is the 1st hard disk and the 1st partition on the hard disk. Repeat the process using the various partitions on the 1st disk (hd0,1 hd0,2) and so

It's running off the live CD, but my intention is to have it run from the hard drive and network it with my other laptop (Ubuntu) and play with it via SSH. I partitioned the drive, formatted it ext3, installed Puppy, installed and configured Grub Legacy, but when I boot to the harddrive, the Grub menu is non-interactive: doesn't boot, doesn't do anything. After I hit 5 or 6 keys, the keyboard beeps at me. [I've read that Grub Legacy is buggy, and I've downloaded and installed Grub 1.96, as far as I know, with Puppy's Package Manager, but I don't know how to find it and run it, how to replace Grub Legacy with it] I've repeated the install process numerous time without success. Since that wasn't working, I thought I'd just run it from the Live CD, which it does. But when I tried to change the root password and to create a new account for myself, these commands: passwd and adduser produced "pam_start() failed, error 26" Anyone have any suggestions for me? I would recommend the automated installer here. Back to top bigpup Joined: 11 Oct 2009Posts: 7888Location: Charleston S.C. USA Posted: Sun 01 May 2011, 14:22 Post subject: This info may also help you:
