Since the boot configuration isn't there, GRUB drops you to the grub-rescue prompt. Following these instructions you should be able to boot Ubuntu. Once you've booted Ubuntu, reinstall GRUB2 by running sudo grub-install sudo update-grub2 share|improve this answer answered Dec 22 '10 at 18:39 mac9416 10.5k53041 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote For anyone who might be searching for a solution: I had this problem after a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 on my HP nc6400 laptop. So far I have been unable to find a solution by googleing. For example, in the answer I explain how to run update-grub (grub-update is now called update-grub).
