managed to find his live CD and no real answer appeared, thus I am re-asking it. I managed to screw up my GRUB by deleting two linux partitions on my hard drive from windows. After this, GRUB gives the error "partition not found", and gives me the grub-rescue> prompt. The only command I have found to work in this is 'ls', which spits out my partitions. I would use the live CD fix, but I am in India, and all my live CDs are back home in the

What should I do? ubuntu partitioning grub restore livecd share|improve this question asked Aug 28 '10 at 12:19 gkanwar 111117 I also should mention that after some working with the grub-rescue> prompt, I determined that grub was indeed on the partition that I deleted. If I could just boot into the other Ubuntu partition that I have to reinstall it, this would be great. –gkanwar Aug 28 '10 at 13:01 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 7 down vote accepted Well, I managed to have this one fixed about 20 minutes after I posted, but I forgot to update this until today. Here's the details: I managed to boot using the grub rescue prompt with the help of the Ubuntu grub2 reference using these commands: ls set prefix=(hdX,Y)/boot/grub set root=(hdX,Y) set ls /boot insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdXY ro initrd /initrd.img boot This got me into my Ubuntu partition, at which point I was able to do "grub-install /dev/sda". And that's it! I can't believe it took me about an hour before I finally found this solution. Hope it helps someone else! share|improve this answer answered Aug 29 '10 at 17:44 gkanwar 111117 Great, nice you could fix it! And the documentation on the wiki improved greatly since I last saw it, which is also great (could be use

That should help you get back into windows. You won't be able to boot from grub rescue because you deleted the grub installation and all the modules etc that would be needed. –nikhil Nov 2 '12 at 17:05 Okay great, So i can download a copy of windows recovery and put it on the USB, and then procede with the normal process right? –user103968 Nov 2 '12 at 20:33 You don't need to download anything, you need to have the windows bootable disk. Flash that on the usb, boot from it and you're done. –

I tried to overwrite the Fedora 19 with Fedora 20 from a net install disk, but the installer crashed halfway through. I let it sit there frozen for a few hours and then took the battery out and rebooted. I got to the Grub rescue screen. When I list the partitions from the grub rescue I get "(hd0) (hd0, msdos1) (hd0, msdos2)". When I try "ls (hd0, msdos1)" I get "fileysystem unknown". Same for the other partition. Then I tried booting from my Ubuntu live CD, but that experienced a kernel panic before I got into the installer. The same thing happened with a Fedora live CD I tried. (both of those CD's worked before) Is there any way I can repair this from the Grub Rescue? Or do you think I would be more successful booting from a non-live CD and reinstalling linux? I don'
