It simply says "error", with no description. Killing and restarting the spooler will not help, but rebooting will. There is nothing in the system http://superuser.com/questions/124412/when-my-printer-fails-to-print-with-only-printer-error-as-the-message-how-can event logs, nor does the print spooler window provide any details other than "error" My question is, when this does occur, is there any way to find out what is causing it to get stuck, so that I can "unstuck" it instead of rebooting? windows-xp troubleshooting printer hp-laserjet print-spooler share|improve this question edited Jan 29 '13 at 4:57 bwDraco 26.1k24101139 asked Mar 26 '10 at 13:00 lavinio 479714 You've done what I would have tried first: you stopped and re-started the print spooler. It didn't help. -- Next thing I would try: disable and re-enable the parallel port in device manager. I don't know if you also tried. (I don't know about parallel printing. But my notebook [Dell Latitude D620] does not like to use the USB ports any more after suspending and re-activating. Here it helps to do the 'disable and re-enable USB port' in device manager and helps me saving a complete re-boot cycle.) –Kurt Pfeifle Jul 31 '10 at 17:50 1 Please understand - this question isn't about fixing it but about trying to find out if it logs anywhere an explanation of the error. It says "error" (and nothing else) in the spooler, so I assume somewhere it should tell me what kind of error. –lavinio Aug 1 '10 at 4:05 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote

Generally there are two data paths taken during a print job; 1) HPIJS driver path 2) Postscript driver path. Both data paths will use the "hp" backend. For the HPIJS path, look for errors near the ghostscript command (gs) command. The gs command will invoke the HPIJS driver. For the Postscript path, there will be no gs command. Postscript will be passed directly to the "hp" backend and then to the printer. ‹ Error: Unable to create print queue, please restart cups and try again up Python 3 Limitations › » Browse Knowledge Base » Search knowledge base » Supported features » How-to's » Troubleshooting » FAQ's » Technical docs Account Mgmt & Posting Qt5 support

To report printing bugs preferably use 'ubuntu-bug cups' from a terminal window which will gather useful information about your system related to printing like the version of Ubuntu you use, configured printers and the versions of important printing packages installed and automatically attach them to your bug report. You can also add the information after the bug is reported by executing 'apport-collect -p cups BUGNUMBER' where BUGNUMBER is the bug report you want to add information to.
