If we navigate to https://fs.4logic.com.au/adfs/fs/federationserverservice.asmx to test we can verify that our AD FS servers are giving us XML.Please note that you cannot use https://fs.4logic.com.au/adfs/fs/federationserverservice.asmx to test your Federation Proxy servers. This test can only be used against AD FS 2.0 servers, not the AD FS 2.0 Proxy servers. When passing this address through your federation proxy you will ALWAYS receive:Service UnavailableHTTP Error 503. Http Error 503 The Service Is Unavailable What Does This Mean
Description: The Federation Service was unable to create the federation metadata document as a result of an error. Document Path: /FederationMetadata/2007-06/FederationMetadata.xml Additional Data Exception details: System.Net.HttpListenerException: The specified network name is no http://clintboessen.blogspot.com/2011/12/http-503-service-unavailable-response.html longer available at System.Net.HttpResponseStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size) at Microsoft.IdentityServer.Service.FederationMetadata.SamlMetadataListener.OnGetContext(IAsyncResult result) The AD FS setup is a standard AD FS deployment with 1 internal AD FS 2.0 server as well as 1 AD FS Proxy server. Both servers are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1, as well as Update Rollup 2 for Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0. https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/54712de4-f046-46fa-91ee-3dadfb731be3/active-directory-federation-services-20-event-id-143?forum=Geneva When accessing http://sts.domain.local/adfs/services/trust we sometimes get "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.", however, a few minutes later the website is working as normal. I have found a similar forum thread that described the exact problem as well as the troubleshooting steps we have performed so far: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2management/thread/ef642548-7c1a-427d-972f-df3dd4f2c829/ This problem is not affecting end user, federation tokens are created successfully. Incidentally you should be accessing the metadata URL and not the path you put in (/adfs/services/trust). The latter path is not valid. Using netsh to trace the internetserver scenario is useful. You will have to install IIS tracing as a sub component to do this. Internetserver allows you to see the request and response to some level and the status codes. If you run the trace for a few hours on both the ADFS and the Proxy, and ensure it covers the period when it logged the event, you can find what really happ
post on how to resolve a "Service Unavailable: error 503" for ADFS 3.0; quick, how to and easy fix to move on. Well, this isn't that kind of post. (If that's all you want, skip to the title http://www.clouduccino.com/2015/07/adfs-3-0-wap-sign-in-service-unavailable-error-503-trivial-overlooked-item-to-resolve/ Solution lower down). What this post is about is two topics today. Topic no. https://yourownoffice365.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/adfs-error-http-error-503-the-service-is-unavailable/ 1 is frustration and topic no. 2 is one of my mantras. So lets begin with a quick vent and some release of frustration. I've just deployed Windows Server 2012 R2 in Azure. To be accurate, I just deployed 7 x Windows Server 2012 R2 servers in Azure compute. Its a small amount of servers. I http error won't bore you with the details of how I simply went via the Azure portal and provisioned them. No Chef, no Puppet or Azure CLI here. Just KISS! (keep it simple stupid). The instances deployed are as of a certain date, as shown below is this brilliant screenshot: What this means is, taken from Azure directly is: Multiple versions of the image are available. As a best practice, consider selecting the service is the latest version. Here's where the venting of frustration comes out. I work with Microsoft products all day, everyday (even though I use a Macbook Pro as my work laptop) and I've been doing so for the last decade of my IT professional career. So I like Microsoft. However, I have a love / hate relationship. I don't love to hate Microsoft, but it certainly feels that way at times. It would be great to expect that when you deploy a Windows Server 2012 R2 instance running an image version from June 25th, that's less than a month ago (at the time of writing this), that the image would have updates, patches, fixes, and general resolution to the near endless problems with roles, features and Windows core components. That's what you'd expect. That's what you'd think. That's what I expected and what I though. WRONG! Let's not spoil the surprise, even though it's rather obvious, and lets move on to topic no. 2 for today's blog: mantras. I have a list of mantras I live by. I wake up everyday at 5.30am, make my morning cappuccino and sit with my journal. I've written down most of my mantras as I feel it not only keeps me moving forward
