I have analyze the wireshark packet, it seems the SSL handshark is correct. I wonder if that could be the problem. –Christopher Schultz May 24 '12 at 14:49 Related problem: java.io.IOException: Server returns HTTP response code 505 –sleske May 21 '15 at 13:08 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 12 down vote accepted If you make a request to Tomcat with trailing whitespace after the HTTP version (as in your example), Tomcat will respond with 505 error. Confirmed on Tomcat 7.0.27. RFC 2616 (HTTP 1.1) says that the HTTP-Version is made up of "HTTP/" + digit + "." digit. Request-Line ends with " " + HTTP-Version + CRLF which means no whitespace is allowed. I can not control the client, but it works well with Tomcat5.5? How to deal with such case? –Simon Wang May 25 '12 at 1:54 It seems our team hacked Tomcat5.5 before so it worked, maybe i need to hack Tomcat7 again to fix this issue. Great Thanks Christ

Microsoft Windows Update reports HTTP 505 errors with error code 0x80244024 (hexadecimal 80244024). Apache web servers report this as follows (text in blue may http 403 error vary): HTTP Version Not Supported The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@example.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10734205/http-error-code-505 might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Further diagnosis The official definition of this error states that “The response SHOULD contain an entity describing why that version is not supported and what other protocols are supported by that server.” [RFC 2616], so carefully search the response for clues as to what to do. (You may have to disable Internet Explorer friendly HTTP error http://www.getnetgoing.com/HTTP-505.html messages in order to see what the server returned.) Cause To determine which HTTP version the server is using, view the HTTP headers that are sent when you request an object from the server, and pay attention to the first line of the response from the server. Official description What you can do about it Control HTTP version under Internet Explorer Officially, HTTP error 505 means that “The server is indicating that it is unable or unwilling to complete the request using the same major version as the client” [RFC 2616, boldface added], though mismatching minor versions are the basis of the resolution suggested by Microsoft: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 811262: “Error Message: Error 501/505: Not Implemented or Not Supported” have caused HTTP 505 errors for other people. Extra information HTTP versions are identified by two integers, which identify the major and minor version, separated by a period, e.g. “0.9” or “1.1”. HTTP versions are defined in the following documents: v1.1: RFC 2616 RFC 2616 is the current definition of v1.1. It was originally defined in RFC 2068, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is further refining the HTTP specification v1.0 (and v0.9): RFC 1945 v0.9 Copyright (C) 2012 | Site map | Con
response. 10.1 Informational 1xx This class of status code indicates a provisional response, consisting only of the Status-Line and optional headers, and is terminated by an empty line. https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html There are no required headers for this class of status code. Since https://httpstatuses.com/505 HTTP/1.0 did not define any 1xx status codes, servers MUST NOT send a 1xx response to an HTTP/1.0 client except under experimental conditions. A client MUST be prepared to accept one or more 1xx status responses prior to a regular response, even if the client does not expect a 100 http error (Continue) status message. Unexpected 1xx status responses MAY be ignored by a user agent. Proxies MUST forward 1xx responses, unless the connection between the proxy and its client has been closed, or unless the proxy itself requested the generation of the 1xx response. (For example, if a proxy adds a "Expect: 100-continue" field when it forwards a request, then it need not forward error 505 http the corresponding 100 (Continue) response(s).) 10.1.1 100 Continue The client SHOULD continue with its request. This interim response is used to inform the client that the initial part of the request has been received and has not yet been rejected by the server. The client SHOULD continue by sending the remainder of the request or, if the request has already been completed, ignore this response. The server MUST send a final response after the request has been completed. See section 8.2.3 for detailed discussion of the use and handling of this status code. 10.1.2 101 Switching Protocols The server understands and is willing to comply with the client's request, via the Upgrade message header field (section 14.42), for a change in the application protocol being used on this connection. The server will switch protocols to those defined by the response's Upgrade header field immediately after the empty line which terminates the 101 response. The protocol SHOULD be switched only when it is advantageous to do so. For example, switching to a newer version of HTTP is advantageous over older versions, and switching to a real-time, synchronous pro
it is unable or unwilling to complete the request using the same major version as the client, as described in Section 2.6 of RFC7230, other than with this error message. The server SHOULD generate a representation for the 505 response that describes why that version is not supported and what other protocols are supported by that server.
