Why do I get an 401.3 access is denied error when the credentials are correct. The credentials box just keeps appearing. I have removed inheritance from the parent directory incase there were any deny permissions, i have checked my account isn't locked and I've even tried using fiddler to see if I can find http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9469018/iis6-access-denied-error-401-3 any problems but I find it confusing. The only way I could get the page to show is by adding the everyone group into the acl which makes me think even though I have specified windows authentication,it's still using another account but i don't know which one? I tried adding the IUSR account into the acl but still no luck. Could it be something to do with NTML and kerberos. on fiddler, it says: WWW-Authenticate Header is present: Negotiate WWW-Authenticate Header is present: NTLM But I don't know if this is correct ( a bit out my league). So any tips or ideas to look at would be appreciated. Double-check that the app pool identity for this application has Read & Execute access to the files on the file system. The App Pool identity could be Network Service, a domain service account, or a builtin account. If that account doesn't have access, IIS won't be able to read the file to serve it to you. –Daniel Richnak Feb 27 '12 at 18:44 So does the app pool identity override the windows authentication? –mjroodt Feb 28 '12 at 8:36 @Daniel I added in the network service and it worked,

I already has IUSR and Server\IUSR will the Read permission. Mine problem turned out to be encrypted folders that were extracted from a Zip file. If the folder name are green, try removing the checkbox from the Advanced settings of the Property box. This fixed my issue. –Lionel Morrison Dec 6 '14 at 2:30 add a comment| 11 Answers 11 active oldest votes up vote 98 down vote accepted IIS 7 also creates "IUSR" as default user to access files via IIS. So make user IUSR has read access to files/folders. How to check if IUSR has read Access? Right Click -> Folder -> Properties -> Security Tab See if IUSR is in Group or user names list, If No. Click Edit -> Add -> Advanced -> Find Now -> Select IUSR and click OK four times share|improve this answer answered Jun 28 '10 at 19:32 Ejaz Thanks, that did it. –Nathan Ridley Jul 17 '10 at 20:12 5 Make sure you're searching from the right location. I was searching for IUSR on my work domain and finding nothing. Then I changed the location to my machine name. –Mike Blandford Apr 8 '11 at 14:50 6 Note: It required both IUSR and IIS_IUSRS having access for it to work on my machine. I tried removing IIS_IUSRS after adding IUSR, thinking IUSR was all I needed, but it croaked. –kdawg Apr 12 '12 at 22:36 It surprised me that just add
