It is driving me up the wall. Here's what I have now. A very simple WCF service with one method that returns a string with the value, "test". A very simple Web app that http error 403 forbidden python urllib2 uses the service and puts the value of the string into a label. A web server running IIS 6 on Win 2003 with a SSL certificate. Other WCF services on the same server that work. I publish the WCF service to it's https location I run the web app in debug mode in VS and it works perfectly. I publish the web app to it's https location on the same server the WCF service resides under the same SSL certificate I get, "The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden" I have changed almost every setting in IIS as well as the WCF and Web apps to no avail. I have compared setting in the WCF services that work and everything is the same. Below are the setting in the web.config for the WCF Service and the WEB app: It appears the problem has to do with the Web app but I am out of ideas. Any ideas: WCF Service: here for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have Meta Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more what's 403 forbidden mean about hiring developers or posting ads with us Stack Overflow Questions Jobs Documentation Tags Users Badges Ask Question x Dismiss Join the Stack Overflow Community Stack Overflow is a community of 4.7 million programmers, just like you, helping each other. I have a HelloWorldService project and a HostDevServer project (Startup Project). I should see a directory listening with two files but instead I get the next error message: HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden The http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20504575/wcf-iis-error-403 Web server is configured to not list the contents of this directory. Most likely causes: A default document is not configured for the requested URL, and directory browsing is not enabled on the server. What I have done: Enabled Directory Browsing in IIS manager Checked if I had Default Documents, they were present. Run command: appcmd set config /section:system.webServer/directoryBrowse /enabled:true In the about screen in IIS it says version 7.5 and in the browser it says "IIS 8.0 Detailed error ...". I don't know if this has something to do with the problem. I use Visual Studio 2013 for development. How do you set the security mode for your service in config file? could you paste WCF application config file? try checking the permission for WCF service directoy enable these 'IUSER_IUSERS' have 'full control' permission or enabling WCF tracing on the service and client side to check the inner detail executed information. #enable WCF tracing. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/madhuponduru/archive/2006/05/18/601458.aspx Please mark the replies as answers if they help or unmark if not. I was testing a WWSAPI client to WCF server interop scenario. Only this time the WCF server was hosted on IIS 7.0 on Windows Server 2008. The WWSAPI client using WS_SSL_TRANSPORT_SECURITY_BINDING with client certificate failed with WS_E_ENDPOINT_ACCESS_DENIED (0x803D0005). The WS_ERROR object contained these error strings (they also showed up in WWSAPI traces in a reverse order. The order below resembles the stack trace of a managed exception): There was an error communicating with the endpoint at ‘https://NWSDC/securityTest/SslAppWithClientCert/Service1.svc'. The server returned HTTP status code ‘403 (0x193)' with text ‘Forbidden'. The server understood the request, but cannot fulfill it. Since this was a typical HTTPS mutual authentication scenario (i.e. client certificate is required), my past experience only pointed to these cases: 1. The client certificate is not specified. 2. The client certificate does not have a private key. 3. The SSL server certificate binding is not configured to negotiate client certificate. 4. The client certificate is not trusted by the server. I was sure that the client certificate with a private key was specified properly since I’d used it in other scenarios. Also, the IIS web application was configured properly to require client certificate as I just did it. So I figured it had to be a distrusted client certificate case. But after I checked the client certificate, its issuer and the server certificate store. it turned out not to be the case. CoJanetter Http Error 403 Forbidden
