web application in ASP.NET 4.0. I've added an asmx service, primarily as a source for the autocomplete extender's lookup values. When I debug on my machine locally, everything works fine. However, when I deploy the web application to IIS 7.5, I get a HTTP 404 response when trying to send data to the service. I am able to browse to the service definition, see the available operations. Tellingly, however, when I use the test pages asmx resource cannot be found to test the service using POST, I receive an HTTP 404 again. I'm not sure what is going on. I did create the asmx file within my web application and it is deployed in the virtual directory of my otherwise working production application. Is there an issue with the .asmx file being deployed in the same virtual directory, perhaps? asp.net iis-7 asmx share|improve this question asked Mar 24 '11 at 7:28 rsteckly 98211533 2 Did you ever resolve this? –Aardvark Sep 30 '11 at 17:35 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 18 down vote I've just encountered the same error, after stumbling over this SO entry: Handlers returns 404 error on IIS7.5 integrated pipeline and ASMX operation 404s, but ASMX service description doesn't, url routing issue? and tried the solution of adding the asmx handler to the web.configs webServer section all was well:

There is http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5416020/asmx-service-works-on-development-server-returns-404-when-deployed-to-iis-7-5 one asmx file, a web.config file and a dll which goes in the bin directory. I install this on a machine with IIS6. IIS6 was already enabled on the machine but no other web apps were present. The installer succeeds and the virtual directory and the files are all present as expected. But any attempt to access the asmx file (for example, the Browse menu option in the IIS https://forums.iis.net/t/prev/1159284 admin tool, or typing the URL in IE, or attempting to connect to the web service from a client) is failing with a 404 'The page cannot be found' error. As a test I manually created (in IIS admin) another virtual directory and placed a trivial test.html file in there. I can browse to that successfully. I copied the same test.html into the virtual directory where the web service is, and I can browse to the test.html from there. So evidently the virtual directory is properly setup and there is not a permissions problem with it. But I cannot browse to the asmx file that my web setup put there. I ran the same web setup for the same web service on another machine and it can be successfully accessed from there. So it appears to be specific to the first machine. One thing about the first machine; when it starts up the W3SVC logs an error to the event log saying "Cannot register the URL prefix 'http://*.80/' for site '87257621' The necessary network binding may already be in use. The site has been deactivated. The data field contains the error number (800700b7). I checked using netstat that nothing else is using port 80; also this d
