vote 171 down vote favorite 33 I'm really new to setting up web servers in general. I've got IIS 8 on Windows 8, and I'm trying to set up a little site locally, while doing some development. In IIS I choose Add Site, give a name, points to a location where I have a index.html file (I've tried different locations, latest in a c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test -folder) and otherwise use all service unavailable iis default settings. However, when I try to browse to localhost I get "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." I've verified the pool is started, and I've given IIS_IUSRS Full Control on the target folder I've search around but not found anything that solved my issue, and there's nothing helpfull in the EventLog or in the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR folder Could anyone tell me what's wrong? Thanks! iis http-error share|improve this question edited Nov 10 '12 at 14:42 asked Nov 10 '12 at 14:33 Andreas 1,35821019 4 Have you checked event viewer for more info? –Webplanet TFS Consulting Nov 11 '12 at 11:06 Hi. Thanks for showing interrest. Yes, I have - but nothing there that's out of the ordinary I'm afraid –Andreas Nov 11 '12 at 20:29 1 A usefull check list (even though it's IIS7) here blogs.msdn.com/b/webtopics/archive/2010/02/17/… - i suspect you have already done these checks, but may help –Webplanet TFS Consulting Nov 12 '12 at 9:43 I gave up and ended up deploying it to Azure. It's where it's going to live eventually anyway, so its perhaps a good thing. But thanks a lot for the input! –Andreas Nov 12 '12 at 21:31 14 Re

is a common and frustrating problem that may occur for a number of reasons after a configuration change, or when deploying a new http://mvolo.com/where-did-my-iis7-server-go-troubleshooting-503-quotservice-unavailablequot-errors/ server machine. Another common "what the hell just happened" error is the plain 503 “service available” error that looks like this: Update: We recently launched a service that significantly http://serverfault.com/questions/335257/http-error-503-service-is-unavailable-how-fix helps you understand, troubleshoot, and improve IIS and ASP.NET web applications. If you regularly troubleshoot IIS errors, manage Windows Servers, or tune ASP.NET performance, definitely check out the demo http error at www.leansentry.com. What is it? This error is generated by the WAS (formerly W3SVC) service, which is responsible for creating IIS worker processes to handle incoming http requests. When WAS fails to create a worker process, it will generate this error. Why does it happen? There are a number of reasons why WAS may fail to start an IIS the service is worker process. These include invalid application pool configuration, failure to create the process due to incorrect application pool identity settings, bad IIS configuration that causes the worker process to fail to initialize, or a process crash due to application logic. I will list the most probable reasons and how to investigate / fix them below. How do I get rid of it? Let’s get rid of it in 4 easy steps: STEP 1: Check whether your application pool is stopped Once WAS fails to start your worker process a set number of times, it goes into Rapid Fail Protection Mode and stops the application pool. This prevents application crashes from taking down the machine by going into a start process / fail loop when a persistent error exists. By default, Rapid Fail Protection is set at 5 times in 5 minutes. Once the application pool that contains your application has been stopped, all requests to applications in it will result in that plain 503 error. So, that’s the first thing we check: > %systemroot%windowssystem32inetsr
