Currently the PHP just issues text saying your ip address has been blocked blah blah blah. HOWEVER I have come across the HTTP Error Code 403 and to be more exact error code 403.6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_403) which I think would be better than just text. But i read somewhere that the .6 is only for windows or something along those lines?? Can I send a http error code 403.6 header through PHP from my LAMP servers and would this be better practice than just sending "you've been blocked text"? php http-status-codes http-status-code-403 share|improve this question edited Jan 23 '12 at 0:00 user212218 asked Apr 17 '11 at 23:05 hozza 165517 Why not just tell the requester "YOU'VE BEEN BLOCKED DUE TO IP"? Most don't have a clue about what a 403 means, much less a 403.6. I guess I'll be interested to see what others have to say. :) –Jared Farrish Apr 17 '11 at 23:08 It does display simple text ATM and not a 403.6, however it is manly harvesting/spam servers that get blocked not humans so surly a proper error would be better? –hozza Apr 17 '11 at 23:12 2 So then why not just report 403? –Jared Farrish Apr 17 '11 at 23:15 Surly a more exact error is better –hozza Apr 17 '11 at 23:31 Maybe, for analytics you could tell what was happening. If your main concern is cold-shouldering the dregs of the intertubes, and you're worried about the random false-positive, then I guess you could be in a quandary. –Jared Farrish Apr 17 '11 at 23:35 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 9 down vote accepted
Status codes 301 Moved Permanently 302 Found 303 See Other 403 Forbidden 404 Not Found 451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons v t e A web server may or may not return a 403 Forbidden HTTP 403 in response to a request from a client for a web page or resource to indicate that the server can be reached and understood the request, but refuses to take any further action. Status code 403 responses are the result of the web server being configured to deny access, for some reason, to the requested resource by the client. A typical request that may receive a 403 Forbidden response is a GET for a web page, performed by a web browser to retrieve the page for display to a user in a browser window. The web server may return a 403 Forbidden status for other types of requests as well. The Apache web server returns 403 Forbidden in response to requests for url paths that correspond to filesystem directories, when directory listings have been disabled in the server and there is no Directory Index directive to specify an existing file to be returned to the browser. Some administrators configure the Mod proxy extension to Apache to block such requests, and this will also return 403 Forbidden. Microsoft IIS responds in the same way when directory listings are denied in that server. In WebDAV, the 403 Forbidden response will be returned by the server if the client issued a PROPFIND request but did not also issue the required Depth header, or issued a Depth header of infinity.[1] Contents 1 Difference from status "401 Unauthorized" 2 403 substatus error codes for IIS 3 See also 4 References 5 External links Difference from status "401 Unauthorized"[edit] Status codes 401 (Unauthorized) and 403 (Forbidden) have distinct meanings. A 401 response indicates that access to the resource is restricted, and the request did not provide any HTTP authentication. It is possible that a new request for the same resource will succeed if authentication is provided. The response must include an HTTP WWW-Authenticate header to prompt the user-agent to provide credentials. If valid credentials are not provided via HTTP Authorization, then 401 should not be used.[2] A 403 response generally indicates one of two conditions: Authentication was provided, but the authenticated user is not permitted to perform the requested operation. The operation is forbidden to all users. For example, requests for a directory listing return code 403 when directory listing has been disab
