You should double-triple-check your web.xml. Could you add it to your post? –Nick Dec 10 '14 at 17:22 1 exactly the problem was in the web.xml. thanks you –Mehdi TAZI Dec 14 '14 at 18:56 Wow, a minor typo in my web.xml was also the cause of this problem. I would never have checked that if I didn't read your comment. Thank you, you saved me hours! –Björn Jacobs Mar 10 '15 at 20:43 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted the solution is the nick comment (http://stackoverflow.com/users/4270992/nick): This happens usually when one of your servlet mappings is broken. Does anyone know what this might mean. I am running Jetty 7 and starting it with the start.jar file. If anyone knows how to configure Jetty to work on Windows, that would be helpful. Thanks. startup jetty http error 503 503-error share|improve this question edited Jul 11 '09 at 13:30 asked Jul 11 '09 at 13:10 Ankur 4895922 What version of IIS/Windows are you using? –Adam Brand Jul 11 '09 at 20:02 Windows VISTA - it's just for dev –Ankur Jul 21 '09 at 16:37 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Check the log files to see if there is more useful information there. If you are not already running it from the command line, try that ("java -jar start.jar" instead of double-clicking the start.jar file). Between those two there should be information pointing you in the right direction. Most likely what is happening is that there is a problem with the WAR file Jetty is trying to start. You will need to see a log file or other output to determine what problem it is having. share|improve this answer answered Jul 12 '09 at 11:36 John Meagher 14623 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote I was getting a 503 error when trying to get Jetty7 up and running on Windows.
