It works fine when I run the website from a browser on the web server itself. When I use IE from another machine in the domain, I get the login box. After 3 tries I http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20921017/http-401-2-unauthorized-error-with-windows-authentication-from-remote-machine get a HTTP 401.2 error: Unauthorized. I've made sure the domain account used by the Application Pool has Read and Execute rights to the website folder, and so does the domain account I'm logging in under when hitting the website (and I've also thrown in 'Authenticated Users' for good measure). Interestingly if I try to access the site using the web server's IP instead of the name, it loads fine. Anyone have thoughts? windows http authentication iis kerberos share|improve this question asked Jan 4 '14 at 12:32 KripsterAtWork 3516 I got it working - I was using kernel mode but set my SPNs up on the domain account the application pool was running under. So switched kernel mode off. –KripsterAtWork Jan 4 '14 at 17:57 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted The reason you're getting a 401.2 when using a DNS name is most likely due to the fact register the name you're using as a service principle name (SPN) in AD. Here's a couple of links that should help you out: Service Principal Name (SPN) checklist for Kerberos authentication with IIS 7.0/7.5 http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webtopics/ar

As I understand it, a 401.2 error http error means that the browser and the site in IIS are using two different types of authentication. I have two Web Services hosted in IIS 7.5. Web Service A makes a call to Web Service B. This is where the 401.2 error happens. Both Web Services have Windows Authentication Enabled with 401 Challenge. The only enabled provider on each is NTLM. The Web.Config for both services is set up to have

I have a SharePoint site running under IIS 6.0, and the IIS web site is configured for Integrated Windows Authentication. The web server is on a domain called STAGING, and most of my users are an another domain, called CORP. The CORP users have STAGING domain accounts, and are able to log into the SharePoint site across the domains (e.g., the users are logged into their CORP workstations and are able to log in to the site). However, STAGING domain users are unable to log in from within the STAGING domain. My understanding was that STAGING domain users should be able to access the site without being prompted for credentials, but this isn't the case. Even so, once the credentials are entered, the result is always a 401. I looked at the HTTP session in Fiddler, and it appears that the server simple isn't accepting the negotiated credentials sent by the client browser. Here's an abbreviated record: HTTP GET server /sites/mysite with headers: { } --> 401.2, with headers: { WWW-Authenticate: Negotiate, WWW-Authenticate: NTLM } HTTP GET server /sites/mysite with headers: { Authorization: Negotiate
