I'm trying to repair a IBM Thinkpad 600 (2645-850) for a friend of mine. At first I got the errors 161, 163 and 173. I purchased a new backup battery from ebay and the code 161 disappeared. I'm now stuck with errors 173 https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Legacy-Laptops-A-I-V/Thinkpad-600-Error-codes-163-and-173-after-CMOS-battery/td-p/826761 and 163. When I turn the computer on these errors appear and I'm taken to the a screen where I can set the date. After I do it I press OK. Then I hear two short beeps and the computer freezes, though I can reboot it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the process all over again. Is the mainboard at fault? ps: The HD is damaged and the battery does not charge. I think these are unrelated http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6744 issues, right? Any help will be appreciated! The suggestion was to replace the RTC battery. You said you did, so maybe it is bad, and maybe the main battery needs to be replaced so the system will charge. The errors appear to be related to your problems. ... I know the backup battery I bought is good because it stores the date I enter. If I enter the date 2006/04/23 -> press OK -> computer freezes -> turn off -> wait for a while -> turn on again, the date will show up as 2006/04/23, not as 1998/01/01 as it used to. Try the reset button rig

The reason your here is because your IBM Thinkpad 600 series has been working on a dependable mode but ibm thinkpad has had a error code(s) 161 and 163 at bootup. When your turning on the Thinkpad from a cold boot rather than optain a predicable proper boot of your flavor of Windows/Linux or other DOS/non Dos Operating System installed in the Hard Drive you suddently see a Flash Screen displaying the Error Codes 161 163 preceding the memory count on the upper left ibm thinkpad 600e hand corner of your screen. Abnormal Boot Error Codes 161 & 163 If the above is a description summary of your notebook's condition one of the first choices you might make is to have a certified technician or IBM Lenovo Factory trained Technician make the decision for you on the proper diagnosis and fault finding solution. There is as well very well knowledgeable and service centers throughout the USA and aboard who work extensively with IBM and/or Lenovo who are more adept with their own Hardwares and the methodology for repairs, as well as many Ebay Sellers who's main focus in on Notebook repairs, specializing in IBM Thinkpads. If you need help in this task, please feel free to ask and we can assist you some who you can contact here on ebay. Now to focus more on the problem of your Notebook and the need for perhaps a cmos backup battery related problem that because of it's low internal current has dropped the voltage threshold down to lower than 2.6v. Note that the cmos batteries that were used in the Design aspect of these Notebooks

You buy this little CR2025 as mentioned above, take the old wires and replace the old CMOS battery (underneath the memory cover). Then press F1 and enter BIOS, setting up date / time and exit. Thats it! PS: a dead CMOS battery is usually in the Thinkpad series after 3-4 years. Fixing cost: $5,00 (even a new one from IBM at this cost!) sidomania, Jul 17, 2003 #2 Advertisements Bruce Markowitz Guest Replace the CMOS battery which lives under the memory cover On Wed, 16 Jul 2003 17:30:22 -0400, "lucky" <> wrote: >if you dont mind my asking, what did you do to get it working again??? i >have a tp600e with exactly the same problem. > >Thanks. > >Greg > > >"philphil" <> wrote in message >news:b7b3nq$n9u$... >> Hello: >> >> I want to thank everyone for their input to this problem of mine. >> >> My Thinpad 600 is back up and runnning, thanks to everyone who replied. >> >> Phil Wong >> >> >> "skygodtj" <> wrote in message >> news:... >> > 192 code= CMOS battery dead, replace it. 161 and 163 codes are bad >> date/time. >> > >> > Hold down F1 key and turn on the 600, after it enters EZsetup, set the >> date/time >> > and then restart. >> > >> > TJ >> > >> >> > > > Bruce Markowitz, Jul 18, 2003 #3 Bruce Markowitz Guest Re: Thinkpad 600 00192, 00163 error--what does it mean?
